This morning in the D’Avossa barrackson the occasion of the 158th anniversary of the Custoza military events, the “Cavalleggeri Guide” Regiment (19th) celebrated the history of the Corps.
On June 24, 1866, during the fighting of the Third War of Independence, the “Guides” were busy countering the enemy forces with numerous charges, allowing the retreat of the Italian infantry who then managed to line up in battle. “For his admirable courage and enthusiasm” the regiment was awarded the Silver Medal for Military Valor.
The ceremony saw the participation of numerous local military and civil authorities, including the Prefect of Salerno, Dr. Francis Esposito. The Municipality of Salerno, in the person of councilor Claudio Tringali, wanted to pay homage to the city’s Flag regiment, as evidence of the strong bond between the local institutions.
In his speech the regimental commander, Colonel Nicola Iovinorecalled the extreme sacrifice of all the Guides who that day offered their lives for their homeland and for the ideals of freedom, and who, with courage and sacrifice, contributed to consolidating the ideals of unity and independence.
The “Cavalleggeri Guide” Regiment (19th) it is a unit of the Bersaglieri “Garibaldi” brigade and has participated in the major national and international operations of the Italian Army. Currently the regiment’s personnel are engaged in the “Strade Sicure” operation in the Campania Group, in the “Baltic Guardian” operation in Latvia, in the “Joint Enterprise” in Kosovo and in the “EUTM” in Somalia. The 1st Squadron Group, however, starting next July, will be employed in the “Leonte” operation in Lebanon.
