It should have been a joyful evening back in Palermo. A Saturday evening spent with the family then turned into tragedy. TO LOSE life, in the accident on the Palermo-Sciacca state road 624 in the early hours of last Sunday, June 23rd, Selma El Mouakit, 20 years old, and little Abd Rahim Gharsalla, just 16 months.
According to what has been reconstructed so far, the driver of the car was the child’s mother, Miriam Janale, 23 years old, hospitalized in serious conditions at the Civic hospital in Palermo. A fourth passenger, Chiara Irmana, 21, was also injured.
Who was the victim of the accident
The family, of origin Moroccan but she has been resident in San Giuseppe Jato for generations and is well known and respected in the town. Miriam Janale’s sister-in-law, as well as aunt of little Rahim, just 16 months old, Selma El Mouakit, is one of the young victims thrown out of the car on the night between 22 and 23 June.
Twenty-three years and his whole life ahead of him. The girl was born Partinico and was graduate last year at the “Carlo Alberto dalla Chiesa” technical institute. Those who knew her describe her as a sunny girl, full of life and with a big heart. Then moved and raised in San Giuseppe Jato in a family of Moroccan origin, but deeply linked to the local community, Selma represented the image of a multicultural and integrated youth.
Condolences on social media
The silence of ache descended on San Giuseppe Jato. After the tragedy on the Palermo-Sciacca train, which cost the lives of little Abd Rahim and young Selma El Mouakit, the community rallies around the destroyed families, finding a minimum of comfort in the words shared on social media. Facebook has also been a condolence platform for years now. Friends and acquaintances they remember the young Selma with affection and disbelief.
The institute, where the girl had obtained a diploma in tourism, writes: “The Director and the entire school community of the IT “CA Dalla Chiesa” express their deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the road accident which occurred in the early hours of today at the SS 624 Palermo-Sciacca. In particular, they rally around the family of Selma El Mouakit, 20 years old, a former student of the Tourism major, who graduated from our Institute at the end of the last school year”.
Then again: “Today is a sad day – writes a user – because a girl and a child lost their lives due to a serious accident – she continues – I don’t dare imagine what the families involved are going through, I hold on to the pain and pray so that God gives everyone the strength to overcome this immense pain.”
“I miraculously survived together with my family on that road (the Palermo-Sciacca) a few months ago – writes Giusy – this news has reopened the wounds and brought back the sad memories – she continues – I’m sorry to see that people continue to die on that cursed road ”.
