Waste emergency in eastern Sicily, the M5s attacks Schifani: «He manages the sector only through ordinances»

«The closure of the Tmb plant in Lentini is proof of a waste management model that only works through emergency ordinances. The lack of a network of plants organized by territorial areas, together with an unprecedented bureaucratic jumble, means that at the slightest hitch the system collapses and Sicily finds itself submerged in waste.” The speaker is the regional coordinator of the M5s Nuccio di Paola.

The five-star party puts the governor in the dock for the latest waste emergency that broke out in Sicily: «Schifani in two years of legislature – underlines Di Paola – has not yet declared what model he wants to offer to our Region; and it will certainly not be the extraordinary powers granted to him by Rome that will help him in this undertaking.”

Meanwhile, Legambiente, WWF and Zero Waste intervened precisely on the extraordinary powers and in recent days, assisted by Giampiero Trizzino, filed an extraordinary appeal with the President of the Republic to request the annulment of the decree appointing Schifani as extraordinary commissioner. «That of the environmentalist associations, accompanied by our Giampiero Trizzino – concludes Nuccio Di Paola – is a meritorious action that we can only welcome and share. We are at their side in this battle to protect the environment.”

The deputy

Sicilian deputy Daniela Morfino also attacks Schifani. «The latest, in the extraordinary waste management signed by Schifani, is the indefinite closure of the Lentini landfill, yet another move that confirms the centre-right government’s inability to identify structural solutions to the problem. The motivation that led Schifani, currently extraordinary commissioner for waste management in Sicily, to decide to close the plant is unclear.”

«While the management model is very clear – he continues – which continues only through emergency ordinances and which collapses at the slightest hitch. What extraordinary nature is there in the powers granted to Schifani if the result is only a mess? A massacre that also winks at waste-to-energy plants as a panacea for waste management which, we will never tire of saying, is only the last of the options in the waste management hierarchy. This is why we fully share the request made by Legambiente, WWF and Zero Waste who, through an extraordinary appeal to the President of the Republic, ask for the annulment of the decree appointing Schifani”. «It is by encouraging the transition towards a sustainable management model that the critical issues are structurally resolved and the environment and citizens are protected», he concludes.
