The Monza metro run can officially start. However, not the actual departure of the underground means of transport – for that we will have to wait until at least 2031-2032 -, but the start of the executive phase which will bring the Lilla line of the Milanese metro to the Brianza capital with 7 city stops. In the Lombardy Region, the last document necessary to start the hot design phase was signed, which should lead to the start of the tender by the beginning of 2025. This involves the signing of the PAUR (Single Regional Authorization Provision), a summary of all the authorizations and all the road, urban planning and environmental authorizations necessary for the realization of the work.

“With the conclusion of the Services Conference and the release of the Paur – declares Giorgio Maione, Councilor for the Environment of the Lombardy Region – we have ensured a fundamental step for the project development for the purposes of the contracting out of a work which for Lombardy is absolutely strategic”. “With the construction of the extension of the line from the current Bignami terminus to Monza, the M5 line will be the first MM line that connects two provincial capitals, Milan and Monza”, the satisfied comment of Claudia Terzi, regional councilor for Infrastructure. The extension extends from Bignami for approximately 12.6 kilometers with 11 stations (of which 4 between Sesto and Cinisello and 7 in Monza) up to the new terminus of the Brianza Institutional Centre. The project also includes the construction of a depot-workshop in the Casignolo district of Monza, capable of hosting up to 60 trains and at the Cinisello-Monza Bettola stop the interchange with a new terminus of the M1 line will be built. The total investment for the work is one billion and 296 million euros, of which 931 million from state resources, 283 million from the Lombardy Region and the remaining 82 million from the municipalities involved. The works, as regards Monza, should begin by 2026 and last 7 years.

“In the coming months – states the mayor of Monza, Paolo Pilotto – we plan to define in greater detail the surface interventions relating to the areas around the seven Monza stops. Environmental compensation was discussed with the various parties, in particular rows of trees along major road arteries, cycle paths, pavements and car parks”. The M5 construction sites will occupy approximately 50 hectares, of which 70% is agricultural area: 20 hectares will be used to build the M5 depot in the Casignolo agricultural area. “The seven planned stops will contribute to designing a new face for the city – concludes the mayor –. Our commitment was aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the city ahead of the construction of the work and at avoiding any possible delay in the planning phases”.
