Saturday at the Campagna Amica Covered Market in Alessandria from 10.30 to 12.30

Cereals: from ancient grains to bread. The different types of flour and their nutritional values

With Irene Calamante, one of the ‘ten women who save the earth’, we get our hands dirty

While waiting for the harvest, a little late in the provincial territory due to the weather, at the Covered Market of Campagna Amica in Alessandria, in via Guasco 19, on Saturday 22 June from 10.30 to 12.30, you will be able to get to know the local cereals, different types of flour and nutritional characteristics through tastings and demonstrations.

A real journey curated by Irene Calamante, owner of the “Cuore di Pane Bio” Organic and Artisan Laboratory of Cabella Ligure, one of the “ten women who save the earth”, the Slow Food Italia project that wants to give value and voice to the Piedmontese women who work to protect the land, produce good, clean and fair food, and change the future.

Specializing in baked products made with sourdough and ancient grains, for Irene Calamante “making bread with native grains allows us to never forget who we are and where we come from. I am convinced that innovation is nothing without the memory of our origins. Knowing them helps us to be more aware of our choices and more similar to the environment.”

It will be an opportunity to learn more about the inestimable value of a supply chain that is the result of the work of entire generations of farmers committed to defending the territory and food traditions over time.

Tastings, recipes, curiosities and, whoever wants it, will also be able to “get their hands dirty”!

“Agriculture is a sector in which biodiversity, environmental protection, passion, common sense, culture and cohesion are concentrated. It is also thanks to initiatives like this that agriculture opens up to the world by making itself known with sincerity and transparency – stated the President of Coldiretti Alessandria Mauro Bianco -. We defend traditions by maintaining contact with the territory and with our roots and we do it in the best way, through the valorisation of a product that is a symbol of agriculture of yesterday and today and more generally of Italy in the world, wheat, which for centuries it has fed entire generations and constitutes one of the pillars of the Mediterranean Diet”.

One of the symbolic products of the Alessandria area is wheat, common wheat, the subject of the Gran Piemonte supply chain agreement aimed at valorising yellow gold and obtaining baked products prepared with real flour Made in Alessandria to also meet the needs of consumers who are increasingly attentive to the origin of the ingredients.

“Protecting biodiversity is a necessary condition for agricultural businesses to stand out in terms of production quality and thus face the globalized market by safeguarding, defending and creating local economic systems around the value of food – added the Director of Coldiretti Alessandria Roberto Bianco -. An important recovery action is due precisely to the commercial outlets created by farmers’ markets which have offered economic opportunities to breeders and growers of varieties and breeds at risk of extinction which otherwise would never have survived the rules of modern forms of distribution”.
