Femicide in Modena: who was Anna Sviridenko, strangled by her ex Andrea Paltrinieri

Doctor, two degrees, shuttling between Austria and Emilia for her children: Anna Sviridenko was only 40 years old when she was strangled by her 48-year-old husband Andrea Paltrinieri. They defined her as a super mother, a lovable and joyful woman, a professional “always with a smile on her face”

A few hours before being killed Anna had received good news and shared it with her sister who lived in Belarus. Before she died in Modena, at the hands of her ex-husband, in a short call she had told her: “I have just won the case for sole custody of my children”. Then the line went dead.

A difficult separation

Many appreciated her and knew Anna’s not rosy situation. An ordeal that began when the woman began separating from Paltrinieri. Since then, the 40-year-old has divided her time between Lower Modena and Austria. But last Monday she had phoned her sister, telling her that she had won her case and that she would take the children to Innsbruck. Then the line went dead and Anna no longer answered. The woman had long lived in fear of an ex-husband who often threatened her that he would make her life impossible if she took away her children or if she made particular problems in managing the family. And she, one sacrifice after another, tried to stay within herself and divided her time between the Italian city of San Felice, in the lower Modena area and Innsbruck at the weekend.

A constant shuttle to be with your children

When the woman arrived from Austria on Monday 10 June – there as a doctor, she worked in a clinic in Innsbruck – she was going to pick up her children who had spent a week with their father. She is a researcher and publicist, she was doing a specialization in radiology in Modena. In her private life, she had been arguing for two years with her husband over the custody of their two children. And so, on this last journey to Cervia, where her father had taken the children to the sea, when she was going to pick them up, he strangled her. He tied a belt around her neck, covering her head with a black bag and then went to turn himself in to the Carabinieri, with her body in the car.

“Anna was loved by everyone in the community”

The woman in San Felice, in the lower Modena area, had found a family. In particular in the two brothers Davide and Giulio Calanca. “We saw each other for the last time on Saturday afternoon, she was happy because on Monday she was going to the beach with the children”, says Giulio Calanca, shocked by what happened. “She adored her children, she was a cheerful girl and she was loved by everyone here.” It wasn’t enough: the woman, after speaking on the phone with her lawyer Francesca Obici and with her sister, who lives in Belarus, disappeared.

“Anna was one of the best students in graduate school”

Pietro Torricelli, director of the integrated radiology activity department of the Modena university hospital, thus remembered Anna Sviridenko. “He had already obtained a specialization in nuclear medicine for which he had practiced at the University of Innsbruck (Austria), also producing very relevant scientific activity which he continued to produce because he had maintained the original relationships with the University – explains Torricelli – Here from she joined us in 2022, because she had made the choice to also specialize in diagnostic radiology and therefore frequented our departments and our services with enormous profit”. “She was a cheerful girl, reserved but extremely available – she continues in her memory – Professionally impeccable and willing. For us it was a shock. Something that shocked us and felt very strongly. I have positive memories of her both from the professional and human. Did he take his last shift on Saturday morning, after which he had taken a few days off due to personal commitments? As mentioned, he was an extremely reserved person me and I don’t think he did it with other colleagues.” “It is an enormous pain for this structure and for all its colleagues. Yet another senseless murder, without any kind of logic”, added Claudio Vagnini, general director of the Modena Aou.

The possible causes of femicide

And who knows if the triggering cause was precisely the complicated process of fostering the children. On May 17 last year, the prevailing placement in the mother’s home and the father’s right to visit were decided. However, at the beginning of the year Paltrinieri had appealed to the civil court of Modena, contesting the Austrian jurisdiction. In the meantime, the woman had asked for sole custody of her and this was most likely the trigger for her ex-husband’s homicidal spree.
