A few hours after the demonstration in Piazza del Popolo in Vittoria, in the Ragusa area, in solidarity with the Zaouali family, the date for the autopsies was set. His 30-year-old son Wajdi Zaouali, suffering from mental problems, set fire to the family home in Vittoria on June 13, causing the death of his mother and sister. The father and the other sister, present at the time of the tragedy, are still hospitalized with a guarded prognosis.
The young man, accused of arson, murder, attempted murder aggravated by family ties, cruelty, frivolous motives and circumstances such as to hinder the defense, is in precautionary custody in prison. He left immediately after the fire and was arrested at the bus station while trying to escape.
On June 25th at 12, in the Prosecutor’s Office in Ragusa, the coroner Giuseppe Algieri will be appointed for the autopsy on the bodies of Mariam, the mother, and Samah, the older sister, which will probably be carried out on the same day. Wajdi Zaouali is defended ex officio by the lawyer Giovanni Ascone, while the Zaouali family, represented by their daughter engaged in university studies outside the region and the only uninjured member, has given the task to the lawyer Italo Alia. It is not yet known whether the parties will appoint consultants.
