One hundred candles blown out and a new horizon: the historic Rome – Lido railway, today Metromare, celebrates its centenary, a century of history and connections that have marked the urban fabric of Rome and the city’s relationship with the sea. This milestone represents not only a moment of reflection on the past, but also an opportunity to look to the future.

The origins. Since its baptism in 1924, the Rome – Lido Railway has intertwined the lives of millions of Romans and visitors, connecting the city center to the Lido of Ostia.

These tracks have witnessed historical events, the social changes and urban evolution of Rome over the decades, constituting the connection between the Capital and its sea.

The history of the railway begins in 1899, when the first project to connect the capital to the Ostia coast was presented by Stfer, with the idea of creating a railway line that would facilitate access to the sea and contribute to the tourist and residential development of the area.

After several revisions of the project, construction work officially began in December 1918, in a period of great turmoil and urban development for Rome.

The construction of the railway, strongly desired by the engineer Paolo Orlando, it required the use of advanced construction techniques and the commitment of numerous workers.

Finally, on August 10, 1924, the Rome – Lido di Ostia railway was inaugurated, marking the beginning of an era of direct connection between the center of Rome and the coast. It immediately became popular and allowed the Romans the possibility of accessing the sea.

Metromare. In July 2022 the regional companies Cotral and Astral took over the management of the line and the Rome – Lido became Metromare with the aim of redeveloping the service provided to citizens through huge investments for the renewal of the fleet and infrastructure.

To celebrate this important anniversary, a series of initiatives and events are planned:
