UDINE – From 21 June to 19 July, every Friday, the Spazio Venezia in Udine will host a series of theatrical performances organized by the Espressione Est Association to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of its foundation. The review, entitled WARS (acronym for Where Are Real Stories), focuses on the First and Second World Wars and the Cold War, and will take place over five evenings, all with free admission.

Prime time: If this is a man

On June 21st, the Teatro Sagrado Group will open the festival with If this is a man, a reading based on the testimony of Primo Levi, an Auschwitz survivor. Fabio Miotti, together with Nevio Delbello and Marco Palazzo, will offer an intense performance, trying to explain the atrocities of the concentration camps with the precision of a scientist. “It’s a true story narrated with a logic that envelops horror, showing how the mass murder was carried out with chilling precision.”

Second evening: Voices of peace

June 28th will be the turn of Voices of peace, a concert show that tells the story of the return of the veterans of the First World War. Staged by the associations La Stropula and Coro Ermes Grion of Monfalcone, the opera is written and directed by Franco Ongaro. “It tells some moments of life in the lower Isonzo area from 1905 to 1919, describing peaceful coexistence and the dramas of conflict through real testimonies, texts and images.”

Third evening: Elio Morpurgo – the Jewish mayor of Udine

It will be on stage on July 5th Elio Morpurgo – the Jewish mayor of Udine, written by Valerio Marchi. With the participation of Sara Alzetta and Stefano Rizzardi and musical interludes by violinist Eva Miola, the show tells the life of Elio Morpurgo, an Italian Jew who was mayor of Udine and was brutally murdered by Nazi-fascists in 1944. “A documented and engaging piece which explores the contradictions and tragedies of its time.”

Fourth evening: Kisses, shots and smuggling

On July 12th the Collettivo Terzo Teatro Gorizia will present Kisses, Gunshots and Smuggling or Nothing to Declare, by Roberto Covaz, directed by Mauro Fontanini. The show focuses on the events of the border between Gorizia and the newly formed Nova Gorica, narrating extraordinary events such as “Broom Sunday”when thousands of Gorizians crossed the border to embrace their loved ones, anticipating the integration that characterizes the European Capital of Culture 2025.

Fifth evening: Twisted track

The exhibition will close on 19 July, again at the Spazio Venezia Twisted track – the Alpine troops in the mud of Vajont, by and with Luca Piana, accompanied by the music of maestro Fabio Rizzi. The show focuses on the Vajont catastrophe, offering a moving and detailed analysis of the event.
