“The policemen in Lombardy’s prisons are literally exasperated, exhausted and unmotivated“. They define the conditions in which they work are “absolutely precarious and unsafe”unsuitable “to manage hundreds of inmates and take over a greater workload of responsibility, but also work and psychophysical stress“. “The situation is so serious”, write the trade union organizations of the Lombard penitentiary police, “that it is no longer sustainable”. That’s why, united, they decided to proclaim the state of agitation of the staff working within the penitentiary institutions of Lombardy, including Cremona.
“All prisons in Lombardy are going through a very critical period resulting from very serious and chronic shortage of Penitentiary Police personnel in all roles“, we read in a press release signed by Unitary trade union coordination in Lombardy which unites all the trade union acronyms. The text underlines “the criticality of chronic overcrowding of Lombardy and Italian prisons: almost three thousand more people detained compared to a capacity of 6,154 beds, with a percentage expected to be 145%, the highest in the entire nation”.
This entails, we read, “the increase of critical events every daysuch as insults, threats and even serious assaults, fires and attempted riots, as well as acts of violence between prisoners, acts of self-harm and even suicides”.
