Massacre averted for the many roe deer that live in the Asti area. The plan presented by the administration of the Province of Asti in the spring was definitively stopped by the Piedmont Regional Administrative Court with the collegial hearing on 19 June.

This was made known by LAV, the Anti Vivisection League, an association that had appealed to prevent the extermination of ungulates in the area.

The facts date back to March 28th, the date on which DCP no. was approved. 14 containing the “Extraordinary and expeditious plan for the containment of stable roe deer populations in the Province of Asti”.

The response from animal rights activists was immediate, announcing a battle in the appropriate venues, relying on the judgment of the administrative court of the region.

The Province of Asti has launched a real war operation against roe deer – accused of causing damage to agriculture and road accidents; however, the Province’s plan does not report any evidence of the accidents and the damage attributed to them is less than laughable” commented Massimo Vitturi, LAV national manager, Wild Animals.

In fact, LAV reports that, of the forty-one areas surveyed in 2023, only eight reported damage attributable to the roe deer species. The Piedmont TAR ruled in favor of the animal defenders and confirmed the suspension of the carnage.

We managed to save the lives of almost all of the 1,240 roe deer sentenced to death by the Province of Asti, while for those who have already been killed we will start proceedings for tax damages to make them pay out of their own pockets” LAV writes with satisfaction in a press release.

The association intends to turn to the Court of Auditors for the fiscal damage resulting from the illegitimate killing of wild animals. The hearing on the merits will now follow, which is scheduled for April 2, 2025.

Until then, the culling of roe deer populations in the province of Asti is permanently suspended by decision of the TAR.
