Livorno The games are over for the council: the Democratic Party has obtained the inclusion of its secretary Federico Mirabelli, now councilor for public works, in the local government team. But once one battle ends, another opens. And the scenario changes: «by statute I cannot remain at the helm of the Democratic Party», says Mirabelli.
So what? «The assembly will elect a new secretary». In addition to the position of secretary, the race is also open for the role of group leader in the city council. The fleet of 14 city councillors, as well as the entire Livorno party, will have to be led “by a person who knows how to keep the party united”. This is how the various party exponents contacted to have their say express themselves. But let’s go in order. The secretary in office does not automatically lose office having been appointed councillor, but given the rules of the party he must still resign. The resignation, however, will not immediately lead to the appointment of a new leader: Mirabelli, as outgoing secretary, will personally follow the transition between his secretariat and the new one, in agreement with the local and regional leaders of the party. to close the start of the council, and therefore to appoint the new group leader, to elect the president of the municipal council and to set up the new commissions.
«It is right that the secretary who has carried out a process should conclude it. The new secretary must have a clean situation in front of him”, is the unequivocal comment expressed by Radio-Pd regarding Mirabelli’s choice of transition. The choice of the new secretary, therefore, is up to the approximately eighty members of the city assembly, who will have to elect him by majority. In 2019, when the then PD secretary Rocco Garufo was appointed councilor for commerce, the council took office on 18 June and Mirabelli became secretary on 1 August. This year the timing should be similar, taking into account that Mirabelli will officially resign at the first meeting called.
Although the party says that “the games have yet to begin”, there are two names that have been persistently circulating in the last few hours to fill the positions of secretary and group leader of the municipal council: Piero Tomei and Valerio Ferretti, both elected to the municipal council with a high number of preferences. «I like to be useful to the party, consistent with my abilities», says Ferretti. Who therefore does not withdraw from the race, knowing that «my name is at stake, especially for the city council. For work reasons, it would be difficult for me to be a secretary. But I repeat: I am at the party’s disposal.” Piero Tomei is also available to the PD: «if someone mentions my name for the role of secretary I can only be pleased. But it seems early to me to talk about roles, the process hasn’t started yet.” So Tomei would also be willing to be the group leader? «There are many valid men and women, it will be the group that you choose independently. The important thing is that the choice is made on a unitary basis, not because one is a Schleinian or a Bonaccinian.”
