The vegetal Cathedral that Amga created with dozens of trees to pay homage to the City of Legnano and the Basilica of San Magno is taking shape.

A vegetal cathedral at Parco Castello that recalls the plan of the basilica of San Magno

It is the homage to the hundred years of the city of Legnano created by Amga. The work, which bears the signature of agronomist Angelo Vavassori, director of the investee’s public green business unit, is gradually taking shape in correspondence with the large lawn located south of the lake. It is a living construction, just as the lime trees that compose it are alive and draw the perimeter of the central nave and the two side naves, in a row that extends for a total length of 20 meters and a width of 18 meters .

Chosen for their characteristics of robustness and resistance, as well as for their thick foliage, the lime trees have already reached a height of around five metres, but they need to develop further so that their branches can then be bent, with the support of some braces, so that they create a sort of ogive arch, i.e. with a pointed top.

The words of the agronomist Vavassori

«We thought we’d create something different and more lasting than what has been achieved in other parts of Italy – explains Vavassori – The very famous vegetal cathedral of Lodi comes to mind, built in 2017 to honor the memory of the architect Giuliano Mauri, one of the protagonists of Land art, and demolished by the Municipality in 2019 for safety reasons: the wood of the 108 poles that supported it had in fact been hit by a fungus which gradually caused them to collapse. The one in Legnano, however, will not have a wooden skeleton: we will still be able to obtain the desired scenographic effect thanks to the arrangement of the plants and their curved tops to form an arch”.

The vegetal cathedral refers to the ancient topiary art (the pruning of trees and shrubs aimed at giving them a precise shape, for ornamental purposes) and recalls some rural works such as the roccoli, the hunting posts used by fowlers to capture avifauna migratory and, from 1969 onwards, when this practice was banned, as stations for scientific observation and photographic hunting. The Legnano vegetal cathedral will also be a sort of observatory for enthusiasts, especially if it is possible to realize a project, which is to create, in the future, an elevated path, which will wind about ten meters high, among the thick foliage of the lime trees: a suggestive position to admire the park from above.
