The Bishop of Civitavecchia-Tarquinia and Porto-Santa Rufina, Gianrico Ruzza, accompanied by the Guarantor of people subjected to measures restrictive of personal freedom of the Lazio Region, Stefano Anastasìa, visited the prison of Civitavecchia today. Accompanying them are the director of the institute, Patrizia Bravetti, the commander of the department, Egidio Giranni, the deputy commander Giampiero Martelli, the head of the treatment area, Marianna Marini, and the penitentiary counselor Serena Fiorentini.
Monsignor Ruzza and the Guarantor Anastasìa met five inmates who were taking the oral exam for their middle school diploma, while 12 other inmates were taking the written Italian test for the final exam of the hotel institute of Civitavecchia.
“In the visit to the Civitavecchia prison, together with the Guarantor Anastasìa, we encountered the difficulties of the lives of the detained people, but also those of the staff, who are numerically insufficient to guarantee the carrying out of external and internal activities. As far as possible, also by virtue of the excellent relationship with the management and with all the operators, our Church of Civitavecchia-Tarquinia maintains a continuous presence to be close to the people detained in the penal structure”. “I am grateful to Bishop Ruzza for his availability for today’s visit – declared Anastasìa – and for the Church’s constant attention to detained people. The Civitavecchia prison, among others, is experiencing the serious problems of overcrowding and staff shortages. We hope that these difficulties will find adequate and urgent institutional responses, as authoritatively requested by the President of the Republic”.
Inside the Civitavecchia prison there are currently 527 people detained, of which 38 are women in the women’s section and around 90 in the two High Security sections.
