Autonomy. Luca Zaia governor of Veneto: “a historic day”

VENICE – A battle by Luca Zaia (photo above) which lasted for years, there was the definitive approval of the bill on differentiated autonomy.

“It’s a historic day. At dawn today a beautiful page of democracy was written. A great sign of democratic respect towards the people. Our thoughts go to the 2 million and 273 thousand Venetians who, regardless of political affiliation, went to vote for autonomy on 22 October 2017. A composed and compact army, which day after day gave us strength to carry forward the reform.

I thank Minister Calderoli, who worked really hard, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni who kept her word, Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini for having politically supported the project from the very beginning, in difficult times, with the majority. Thanks to those who worked in the parliamentary halls, in institutional offices, among our people to make the importance of this historic step understood. In short, all those who voted and supported this path, approached with extreme coherence and respect for the Constitution, in accordance with the dictates of the founding fathers and the will of the citizens.

Now a milestone has been reached: an important page in the history of our country and our community has been written. In the name of a path of modernity, responsibility and efficiency. Italy, gradually and respectfully, will move towards a management model already adopted successfully by many large European countries and at an international level. The objective will be the fight against inequalities and the greater closeness of the institutions to the citizens.

With the approval of the autonomy, and its subsequent publication, a path begins that will see each of us committed to the drafting of individual agreements. Making the most of the real effectiveness of differentiated autonomy, with agreements between the State and the Regions that wish to request autonomy with responsibility”.

These are the words with which the president of the Veneto Region, Luca Zaia, comments and expresses satisfaction with the definitive approval of the bill on differentiated autonomy.

“A very peaceful good morning today, Wednesday 19 June 2024.

A day that will go down in history – the regional councilor’s comment Laura Cestari (photo above) – like the day when Autonomy became State Law.

A reform dreamed of for many years by the first autonomist movements, desired by the Venetians who voted en masse for the referendum of our Luca Zaia, then carried forward by all the representatives of the League at all levels, from Salvini to Calderoli up to the Secretary Stefani.

Today we all won because we can finally say that the biggest reform in the country, awaited for many years and itself foreseen by the Constitutional Charter, it is law.

Not only Veneto and our citizens will benefit from it, but all of Italy.

Because centralism has split Italy and Autonomy could truly be the solution to all the dramatic problems created by Rome’s obsessive and inefficient control.”
