a harmless but widespread phenomenon

Monday 17 Juneduring monitoring activities at sea, the technicians of Harp FVG have detected the presence of surface mucilage in the waters off Miramare. This phenomenon, although not new, always arouses great interest and concern among citizens and tourists who frequent our coasts.

Identification of the person responsible

The observation of samples of sea water and mucus under an optical microscope made it possible to identify the numerous presence of dinoflagellate Gonyaulax fragilisa microalgae that is normally part of the local microphytoplankton population. It is not a toxin producing organism and, therefore, it is completely harmless to human health and other marine organisms.

Characteristics of the mucilage phenomenon

Gonyaulax fragilis is known for its ability to produce mucus, a characteristic that makes it often associated with the phenomenon of mucilage. This phenomenon has already occurred in the past, particularly over the years 1988-89 and 1991when large quantities of mucilage characterized the waters of Gulf of Trieste. Under these conditions, the microalgae finds a favorable environment for a massive proliferation.

Weather, climate and nutrient conditions

The meteorological conditions of this early summer, combined with the supply of nutrients that reached the sea with the heavy rains of the last period, have created the ideal conditions for the flowering of Gonyaulax fragilis. This microalgaethanks to these environmental resources, it was able to develop significantly, giving rise to the phenomenon of mucilage.

Impact of the phenomenon on our coasts

The phenomenon of mucilage, also known as “dirty sea“, is well known in the coastal areas of the Adriatic Sea, particularly in our region. Pelagic mucilaginous aggregates are composed of organic and inorganic materials, incorporating bacteria, phytoplankton cells, zooplankton organisms, inorganic detrital material and other suspended particles.

The nature of mucilage

Mucous substances can be secreted by a variety of plants, animals and microbial flora. The release of extracellular organic substance by phytoplankton it is a completely normal physiological process, which intensifies in particular environmental conditions. This release contributes to the formation of mucilage, amorphous aggregates that can reach considerable dimensions.

Reports along the coasts of Western Istria

The phenomenon was already reported along the coasts of western Istria at the beginning of the month, indicating a spread of the phenomenon in a larger area than that of Miramare. This suggests that the conditions that favor the proliferation of Gonyaulax fragilis are present in different areas of the Adriatic Sea.

Future monitoring and controls

In the next few days, further checks will be carried out to follow the progress of the mucilage phenomenon. Harp FVG will continue to monitor the situation to ensure water safety and provide updated information to citizens and competent authorities.
