ANCONA In 2010, compensation for damage caused by wildlife at a regional level stood at around 800 thousand euros. In the last year we reached 1.4 million euros. A surge of 75% which translates into figures a problem that has resulted in an emergency.

The comparison

It is no coincidence that farmers on a war footing and ready to mobilize yesterday met the prefect of Ancona Saverio Ordine to seek a solution to the plague of wild boars, a scourge of the fields and the cause of road accidents. «The situation is now out of control», the alarm raised by Maria Letizia Gardoni and Alberto Frau, respectively president and director of Coldiretti Marche. The presence of wild boars is estimated at 40 thousand heads throughout the region, even close to the most populous urban centers. Coldiretti does not spare Palazzo Raffaello: «It is time for the Region, given that the ungulate containment plan expired in 2023 and has been extended, to equip itself with a new document that makes the fight more incisive». While waiting to see if this appeal will be accepted, yesterday in the Regional Council the law was approved by a majority which updates the rules – stuck in 1995 – for the protection of wild fauna, for the protection of environmental balance and the regulation of hunting activity. The article provides for the transfer of some competences from the Province to the Region and regulates the competences and functioning of the territorial hunting areas, the control of wild fauna, the regional advisory commission, the management of fixed stakeouts and dog training areas.

Resources

To cover the law, 9 million euros have been allocated in the budget for the three-year period up to 2026. A legislation “that did not have a simple genesis”, says the Councilor for Agriculture and Hunting Andrea Antonini in euphemisms. «We started talking about it in May last year», and even within the council there was some friction on the difficult matter to say the least. But he assured that “agricultural companies will always be compensated in full for the damage and prevention funds are foreseen”. Words that are echoed by those of the majority speaker Marco Ausili (FdI): «Regional fund that ensures ATC resources for wildlife and environmental management activities. All accompanied by a more effective plan to contain the wild boar species.” Reassurances that do not convince the minority rapporteur Micaela Vitri (Pd): «A necessary law, but the way it was set up displeases everyone. It finds no solutions either for ATCs or for damage to agriculture by wild boars and wolves.” Who have now come to practically walk on the beaches.
