The shadow of the mafias on the economic fabric of Umbria: an alarm from the Dia

The Anti-Mafia Investigation Directorate (DIA) has revealed the presence of ‘Ndrangheta and Camorra “projections” in the business fabric of Umbria. These criminal organizations are ready to exploit any economic-financial opportunities to launder illicit capital. These are the conclusions of an investigation into organized crime in the region, the results of which were presented to Parliament in the first six months of 2023.

Although Umbria is characterized by a thriving economic-productive fabric, the Dia has found that there are no stable forms of rooting of mafia-type criminal structures. However, the presence of prisons in Spoleto and Terni has favored the settlement of families of Calabrian and Campania origin, related to prisoners under special regime.

To combat the infiltration of organized crime, the prefecture and the Prosecutor’s Office of Perugia signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 15 February 2022. This agreement aims to strengthen the prevention and fight against mafia crime through joint monitoring and analysis activities on possible infiltration attempts by organized crime into the legal economy.

The prefect of Perugia has issued three anti-mafia interdictory measures against companies operating in the car and clothing trade sectors, as well as in the bar and restaurant service. These measures were issued to prevent infiltration attempts by the ‘Ndrangheta and the Camorra.

The Dia also executed a confiscation decree against a family of Cutrese origin, belonging to the ‘Ndrangheta Grande Aracri clan. Assets, money and companies worth a total of 13 million euros were confiscated.

Finally, the investigations highlighted the operations of foreign associations, mainly Nigerians and Albanians, interested in drug trafficking, predatory crimes and the exploitation of prostitution. These results underline the need for decisive and continuous action to combat organized crime and protect the economic fabric of Umbria.
