stop the carriages (in the heat) in the historic center

No carriages that circulate in the city during the hottest hours of the day, i.e. between 1.30pm and 3.30pm. Prohibition that extends from 12.30 to 16.00 in the event of a “risk 3” weather alert, therefore in view of the risk of heat waves. This is what the new ordinance signed by the mayor Roberto Lagalla provides to protect the well-being of the horses that circulate in the historic center, a major tourist attraction especially in the summer period.

On the other hand, it is absolutely necessary to safeguard the health of these animals, especially in these hot months. Here, specifically, is what the ordinance provides (born from the collaboration between the Municipality offices, the municipal police, the ASP, the Animal Rights Guarantor and the presidents of the animal rights and production activities council commissions).

1. Traffic ban every day, in the summer period (from 1 June to 30 September), for 2 hours in the hottest time of the day, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm regardless of the degrees.

2. A ban that is extended on the days of weather alert “risk 3”, from 12.30 to 16.00.

3. Limit the towed load to no more than double the weight of the horse including carriage, passengers and driver (equivalent to the weight of the carriage and five average weight people).

4. Predict stops in areas with a sufficient shaded area to protect the animals from prolonged sun exposure or in any case from atmospheric agents, not less than 15 minutes every 2 hours.

5. Working hours cannot exceed 8 per day.

6. In the period from 1st June to 30th September, take care of showering/sponging refreshing and foraging at the rest points, mandatory in the event of a “risk 3” weather alert.

7. Provide for removal of excrement by cleaning the areas affected by animal parking.

Always with the aim of aiming for the well-being of the horses, in recent months the administration has installed 6 water supply points for horses in Corso Calatafimi, near Porta Nuova and in the Piazza della Vittoria, Bologni, Bellini, Marina and Verdi, so as to allow the constant showering and sponging activities provided for in the ordinance.

«At the same time, as has already been recorded in recent days with some operations, the municipal police will continue its zero tolerance activity against illegal workers, while we expect the authorized coachmen to firmly respect the rules prescribed in the ordinance, in the interest , first and foremost, animal welfare”, say the mayor Roberto Lagalla and the councilor for animal welfare Fabrizio Ferrandelli.
