The wait is growing the 111th edition of the Tour de France which will leave Italy for the first time in its history on Saturday 29 June. The hope is that our cycling can achieve better results than in the recent past. The last Italian to leave his mark was in fact Vincenzo Nibali. In the 2014 he wrote his name in a roll of honor which then no longer saw Italians excel and on 27 July 2019 at the finish line in Val Thorens he signed what remains the last stage victory of our movement today. Since that day 85 individual fasting fractions.

All in all 7 Italian cyclists have written their names in the Grande Boucle’s roll of honor for a total of 10 triumphs: the doubles scored by Bottecchia in 1924 and 1925, from Bartali in 1938 and 1948 and since Coppi in 1949 and 1952, in addition to the individual successes celebrated by Nencini in 1960, from Gimondi in 1965, from Pantani in 1998 and precisely since Nibali in 2014.

After the feat of the Sicilian champion, the best Italian placings at the Tour were 4th place also for Nibali the following season and Fabio Aru’s 5th in 2017. In the last 6 editions (from 2018 onwards) the only top ten placement for Italian cycling was Damiano Caruso’s 10th place in 2020. In total 25 Italians reached the final podium of the Grande Boucle at least once.
