There will be more than 900 athletes at the start of the Monza Resegone which will take place on Saturday 22 June. In the year of the centenary (the first edition was held on 9 November 1924 with the participation of twelve teams) the event, now in its 62nd edition due to some interruptions over the years, doubles in size.
At the traditional trio race starting from the Arengario and arriving at the Rifugio Capanna Alpinisti Monzesi on Mount Resegone (42 km for 1,000 meters of altitude difference) this year there will be the ‘Relay’ mode, a team relay in which three athletes will take turnscovering respectively 15.3 km (from Monza to Osnago), 15.7 km (from Osnago to Olginate) and finally the 12.2 km that separate Olginate from the Capanna Alpinisti Monzesi refuge.
Monza-Resegone starts on June 22nd, village in Piazza Roma
The Monza-Resegone village will open on Saturday at 3pm in Piazza Roma. The first relay participants will start at 8pm. An hour later the competitors of the classic race. There will be 101 teams competing in the relay: 48 men’s, 9 women’s and 44 mixed. More than double the trios registered for the classic race: 215 teams of which 120 men’s, 12 women’s and 83 mixed. Overall, in the ‘Relay’ mode there are 82 women and 221 men, for a total of 303 athletes.
At the start there will be 32 women, who will cover the first fraction up to Osnago. As for the “classics”: there will be 645 athletes competing, of which 136 women and 509 men.
Organizing the event, together with the Società Alpinisti Monzesi, are the Monza Marathon Team (which has supported Sam for several years), the Runners Desio, the GS Avis Seregno, and the GP Villasantese. The race can be followed live on YouTube. It will culminate on Friday 28 June when the athletes’ awards ceremony will be held at 9pm at Arengario.
