He was born in Turin Claudio Grazianothe president of Fincantieri Group found dead this morning in Rome at the age of 70. A note and a gun found near the body strengthen the hypothesis that it was suicide. Recently there had been no shortage of personal problems and vicissitudes of various types capable of taking away the serenity of a prominent personality in the military world. Graziano was his career Chief of Defense Staff from 2015 to 2018 and thereafter President of the Military Committee of the European Unionuntil 2022, the year of his appointment as Fincantieri’s number one.
The roots of an extraordinary military career lie precisely in Turin and Piedmont. Born under the Mole on November 22, 1953the young Graziano opted for a very specific path right after high school, with the choice to attend the Military Academy of Modena, where he remained from 1972 to 1974. After which Claudio returned to Turin and completed his training as an army officer at the Military Application School. In Via dell’Arsenale he graduated in Military Strategic Sciences.
His first assignment, which arrived in 1976, was that of commander of a rifle platoon of the «Susa» Alpine Battalion, in Pinerolo, then, in 1977, he became deputy commander of the anti-tank company of the «Taurinense» Alpine Brigade. Thus a bond was born with the military unit which still has its headquarters in the Monte Grappa barracks that will last a lifetime. His career in the military world led Claudio to carry out missions all over the world, but in 2004 he returned to Turin as commander of the «Taurinense»remaining in this role until 2006: a period of time in which he honorably bears the name of the Brigade even in Afghanistan. Then further growth in prestige and positions held, until he became Chief of Staff.
Graziano was married to Marisa Lanucara and the two lived in Rome until her death in April 2023. Also a year ago he arrived an indictment for negligent disaster as part of an investigation into the effects of years of exercises at the Teulada military range. Today, the light went out permanently.
