The Museum of Civilizations of Rome inaugurates its 2024 summer program with a series of exhibitions, conversations, screenings, workshops and guided tours, to celebrate and share the cultures of the world. This initiative intends to explore popular arts and traditions as well as the contemporary research of international artists, through a journey that includes exhibitions and stimulating activities for all ages.

Romania-Italy exhibition: a dialogue between embroidery and ceramics

From 18 June to 14 July, the Museum will host the exhibition “Romania-Italia. The art of embroidery and ceramics, a world heritage”, in the Hall of Honor of the Palace of Popular Arts and Traditions. Created in collaboration with the Presidency of the Culture, Science and Education Commission of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament, the Embassy of Romania in the Italian Republic and the National Museum of the “Dimitrie Gusti” Village in Bucharest, the exhibition offers a comparison between clothes traditional Romanian and Italian.

The exhibition presents, alongside the clothes, ceramic artefacts that document the materials, techniques, symbols and decorative motifs of ancient craftsmanship. This event allows not only to admire the objects, but also to understand the cultural richness of the popular traditions of both countries. The following day, Wednesday 19 June, a conference will be held which will see the participation of important exponents of the cultural sector of Italy and Romania, including the Hon. Federico Mollicone and Paulina Popoiu, to discuss the restoration, conservation and promotion of traditional costumes and ceramics.

Workshops, artistic projects and cultural meetings

The Museum of Civilizations’ summer program includes a series of workshops, meetings and screenings designed to engage the public in different ways. The “ric-AMIAMO (together)” workshop will be held on Saturday 29 June at 11:00 and will be an opportunity to experiment with embroidery techniques.

Furthermore, on Tuesday 25 June at 5pm, the museum will host a meeting of the “Patrimonio Dissidente” project by the artist Cosimo Veneziano, which will investigate the relationship between public space and cultural identities. The role of historical monuments and the implications of collective memory will be analysed, with interventions by experts such as Elisa Uccellatori, Sergio Fortini and Simon Martin.

On Wednesday 26 June, at 4.30 pm, the author Igiaba Scego returns to the museum with the series of meetings “(Re)writing the past between colonial memories and forms of resistance”, to discuss Africa, colonialism and contemporary memories. The debate is enriched by the presentation of the anthology “Africana. Journey through the literary history of a continent vol. 2” with the participation of authors and critics.

Somali culture and reflections on colonial heritage

One of the most anticipated events is the third edition of the “Somali Culture Week” from 28 to 30 June. Organized in collaboration with the Somali cultural association in Italy Somaliley Toosa, this initiative includes meetings with writers, dances, parades and storytelling to enhance Somali culture in Italy, on the occasion of the anniversary of Somalia’s independence.

The “La Collezione in Tumulto” project, scheduled for Thursday 27 June at 5.30 pm, will deal with the relationship between ideologies and infrastructures in the Italian colonial context, with interventions by experts and the presentation of Adelita Husni Bey’s permanent laboratory. It will be a shared reflection on the collections and legacy of the Colonial Museum of Rome.

The program will continue on July 3 at 5.30 pm with the screening of the film “MAMMA PERDONAMI / MËMA MË FAL” by Genny Petrotta, a poetic exploration of peasant traditions and Italian historical memory, produced in collaboration with various European cultural bodies.
