The director of the Cuneo hospital: “Doctors escape from S. Croce? In one year I appointed 10 head doctors”

Ten head doctors appointed, in a year of presence at the top of the Santa Croce e Carle hospital health authority, by the general director, Livio Tranchida. The new entries: Massimo Chiarpenello in the complex structure of Dermatology and Domenico Vitale in Cardiothoracic Vascular Anesthesia and intensive care.

Director Tranchida, some time ago it was said that from Santa Croce in Cuneo there was an ongoing “flight” of primary doctors towards more attractive centres.

«In one year, the first of my mandate, I appointed 10 directors of complex structures and one departmental director. Our hospital is highly attractive, even compared to the past.”

There are, however, those who leave the Cuneo hospital.

«The situation is different for the turnover of medical and nursing staff. Professionals who have grown up on bread and Santa Croce and expect a managerial or career management path can look elsewhere, because beyond the current number of head doctors our garrison cannot increase. But this also has a positive side.”

What would it be?

«We export to nearby hospitals, such as Mondovì, Savigliano or Verduno, professional figures who have grown up with our system of values and skills. Also a way to strengthen the territorial link between hub and spoke hospitals, with relationships between professionals. Not long ago, for example, Dr. Aldo Manca retired after 40 years spent at S. Croce. A whole career here, but now the model has changed. However, this is a different discussion from that of attractiveness.”

Was there participation in the primary school competitions?

“Yes. Both doctors with internal careers and figures from outside the region participated in the selections. It is no coincidence that since 1 May Dr Riccardo Bonomi, a breast specialist and former head of department of the Breast Unit of the Ospedali Riuniti di Sussex in London, has been on duty in Cuneo”.

A professional who attracts patients, we imagine.

«Access to the Cas, the reception and services center of the oncology network, is increasing. A sign that, where professionals in the sector arrive, the sense of security of those who need to be treated towards a facility also grows. And that Santa Croce deserves it is also proven by another number.”

What does he mean?

«Our hyper-production, equal to 105% of 2019. That is, the entire activity carried out, from complex outpatient care to surgical interventions, which is higher than the pre-pandemic period. It means that the machine works and meets health needs. Our professionals have a significant workload, but there is a climate of great change and renewal.”

And the waiting lists?

«S. Croce began some time ago to extend some clinics on Fridays until 11pm and on Saturdays until 12pm. And it will continue. But it is a systemic battle, not limited to Cuneo or the Region. On Friday we had a meeting in Turin with all the general managers, to analyze data and evaluate paths.”

Have you filled all the open positions at S. Croce?

«All filled. The greatest need remains that of nursing, with Regione and Azienda Zero we are working to resolve what is an objective need for the entire country. We are working to strengthen the current staff in the areas of Neurology, where we will soon include some figures, and Dermatology. With systemic difficulties in finding specialty professionals. And this actually lengthens the time.”
