Domenico Roma is increasingly distant from Messina, so much so that the former Vibonese appears one step away from defining the agreement with Foggia. From the step of “guarantor” in Modica’s return to the biancoscudato and in the reconstruction of the relationship with president Sciotto last summer, to finding himself almost at the door of a club that is rebuilding itself from all points of view. So the coach remains, the sporting director will probably go elsewhere when his contract expires on 30 June.
So the sporting director slot could be occupied by Agatino Chiavaro, fresh from his long experience in Acireale and who would have had some conversations with president Pietro Sciotto in recent weeks. The former ACR footballer, between the lines, confirms the contacts as well as the ambition and desire to compete with a team he has already tasted as a footballer, winning the Serie D in 2012/13, in a year for him with a bittersweet taste: «I would like it – says Chiavaro – but at this moment I still don’t know what will happen. In recent days the president has had other priorities, such as resolving the coach’s position, let’s see.”
And it’s a “let’s see” that seems possible: «I hope so and it would be a welcome return, because the square has always been close to me after that season as a footballer. Let’s say that I have a score to settle with Messina and that, in the meantime, it was important to confirm the coach who did a good job last year.” There have been several clubs that have approached Chiavaro in recent weeks after the farewell to Acireale (above all Siracusa and Reggina), but football is made up of particular dynamics and the negotiations did not come to fruition. Messina would be a stimulating reality in which to work after the six years in Acesi in which he did his best despite the difficulties: «We have never had the strength to win the championship – continues Chiavaro – but we have always done very well, growing a series of interesting guys.” Like Diego Zuppel, who exploded in the second part of this last season: «A boy with quality who needs to be pampered and stimulated. If you take him in the right direction he can make the difference, even if it is true that there is an important difference between Serie C and D. He is requested by many teams such as Catania, Trapani and Arezzo and then from 2002 he will also be useful among professionals for the minutes.”
The alternatives: two other names But there are also other profiles vying for the ds box. The candidacy of Angelo Costa remains alive, as he has indicated his willingness to dedicate himself to the technical sphere after leaving the operational management. The other strong name, however, is that of Umberto Calaiò, formerly of Licata and Marsala, who moved from the scouting area of Parma and Turin and from the role of observer in Messina between 2004 and 2006. It would be a profile very close to both Giacomo Modica and Saverio Provenzano, in pole position to become the Biancoscudato general manager.
