Trento is preparing for a season of construction sites. Less than a week after school ended, the time has come for the city to start the works, which will also have consequences on traffic in the capital.
The four construction sites
There are four areas in total that from Monday will become the scene of renovation and safety measures. Specifically, from tomorrow work will begin in Piazza Sanzio, in via Clesio but also in the underpass of via Fratelli Fontana and another at exit 6 north of the ring road, where a road improvement intervention will be implemented.
New road system
Work on the ring road will begin tomorrow and should be completed at the end of August. 60 days to double the exit lanes on the Via Berlin roundabout, an intervention for which it will be necessary to close the slip road at exit 6 for those coming from the south. As a result, changes to the city’s roads are expected which workers coming to the city tomorrow morning will have to keep in mind. Traffic coming from south to north that needs to enter the city or continue towards Riva del Garda will have to use exit 5 of the civil motorization office, if it is a car. In the case of heavy vehicle traffic, there will be an obligation to continue straight on the ring road up to exit 7, on Via del Commercio, with the exception of vehicles headed for technical tests at the motorisation office, which will be able to use exit 5 of Piedicastello. However, there is no limit for those who will have to continue north. Citizens should keep in mind that from tomorrow there could be slowdowns on traffic both in the city and on the ring road. Travel times may increase. Closures and changes which could almost certainly lead to critical issues in terms of traffic on Via Brescia, with slowdowns at junction points near the roundabouts, such as those of Piedicastello and San Lorenzo, but also on the Via Maccani roundabout or on the overpass of Nassiriya.
Piazza Raffaello Sanzio
Work will also begin on the Raffaello Sanzio elementary school, which will continue for 45 days. The third lane going towards the station will be closed for the entire duration of the intervention. The project involves expanding the pedestrian area in front of the east door of the Sanzio schools by bringing the vehicle area leading to via Torre d’Augusto level with the sidewalks. The metal fence will be demolished and the entire area in front of the schools will be re-paved in porphyry, so as to join it to the recently completed pedestrian area of Via San Martino.
Via Bernardo Clesio
At the intersection with via San Marco, in via Bernardo Clesio, a redevelopment project is planned for the bus stop at Castello del Buonconsiglio but also the pedestrian crossing.
The duration of the works is estimated from the end of June to the end of September. Also in this case the road system will be modified and divided into three distinct phases. In July there will be two-way traffic in this area, in August one-way traffic alternating with traffic lights, and from August to September two-way traffic again.
The underpass of via Fratelli
The works in the underpass, however, will last from 45 to 60 days and include the arrangement of the access ramps. For this reason, in that period, one-way traffic will be imposed from Piazza General Cantore to Piazza Centa.
The police station
Don’t worry, however, about slowdowns or traffic that could clog up the city in the coming weeks. In fact, the local police will guarantee its presence during the busiest hours of the morning and afternoon to regulate traffic on the roundabout of via Maccani, Piedicastello, Ponte San Lorenzo and Nassirya. «We don’t expect particular disorders or problems – explains Alberto Adami, the commander of the local police of Trento – Schools are finished so traffic should be less. From Monday our agents will be at exit 6 of the ring road to manage traffic, a delicate point that deserves attention. We’ll see how the construction season proceeds in the coming weeks.”
