“Further clarification” from the Mayor of Messina on the Aldo Moro Park: Coletta “when the patch is worse than the hole”

The tones used by Mayor Basile in the post on Facebook called “Further clarification” regarding the judicial seizure of the Aldo Moro Park. Given that only after my post published on social media was the mayor, bombarded with phone calls from the press, forced to make public the reasons for the seizure of the area, despite having been aware of the provision for a few days.

It would therefore have been more correct inform in advance both the press and citizens, avoiding misunderstandings and above all inconvenience to the dozens of visitors left outside the gates. Instead, the mayor angrily writes, among other things: “With great regret (and I limit myself to this term…) I refer to many articles and posts… which tend to fuel “sterile controversies generating pure alarmism”.

A mayor, both for his institutional but above all social role, it should have very different ways of communicating with its communityusing conciliatory tones, rather than continually resorting to cloying and resentful expressions, repeating dots and even exclamation points. We hope that the statement was instead written by some of his collaborators who more than once used inappropriate and sometimes offensive terms and tones, both on social media and, even more seriously, in the official press releases of the Municipality.

Returning to the story of the Aldo Modo Park, which I have been dealing with for years, the Mayor must respond to a series of serious design shortcomings which heavily influence the usability of the work which, as everyone knows, has been politically emphasized for electoral purposes, so much so that the inauguration was made to coincide with the European elections .

Primarily the absence of toilets in the Park, which recalls Villa Mazzini which remained without bathrooms for two years, forcing visitors to use hedges and the hollows of magnolias to carry out their needs; Luckily in the Park there are many areas where you can find a bit of privacy…

While Messina suffers a serious water crisisthe tanks from 60 thousand liters of the park are filled daily by the aqueduct citizen and by the shuttle of tankers removed from the supply services that are already requested by citizens who have been left stranded in recent days due to the reduction in supply.

The creation of a building had to be envisaged in the design phase well or connection to some private wells in the area. And what about the lawna questionable choice due to the high maintenance costs, the duration over time and the considerable water requirement, especially in the 4-5 summer months (7 liters per day per square meter x 6000 square meters of lawn + 8 thousand remaining with seedlings and small trees to be irrigated, for a total of approximately 60 thousand litres.

On the seizure of the areaincomprehensibly kept “secret” by the Mayor, also due to the inconvenience caused to visitors who found the seals on the gate, it must be said that the northern slope was not interested by the designers in any valorisation through naturalistic engineering works such as pilings useful for securing the slopes from possible slips of stones on the sidewalk of the ring road. This would have increased and made the park area more pleasant and they would probably have found the pollutants that caused the seizure. So stating that that area is not among those usable is one of the many sensational own goals. It must also be said that the area in question is completely engulfed by a devastating weedthe Ailanthus altissima which has in fact colonized a good part of the Park. At the time I urged one of the designers, who then disappeared into thin air, urging him to reclaim the area and in particular the embankment subject to the seizure, with chemical weed control. If I had been listened to, we would probably have one less problem in the Park and we could have proceeded reclamation of the ridgewhich anyway represents a danger due to the notable presence of debris and stones which, due to the considerable slope, could fall onto the pavement of the ring road below.
