Ilaria Salis returned to Italy today, Saturday 15 June, after having served 16 months of preventive detention in Budapest on charges of having attacked far-right militants in February 2023. The newly elected MEP with Avs arrived at the home of the his parents in Monza, after having made the long journey from the Hungarian capital by car. With her her father Roberto, who left yesterday by car towards Hungary to collect her as soon as he received the news that judge Jozsef Sos granted her immunity, freeing her and suspending the trial against her, with the consequent removal of the bracelet electronic device that he had since May 23, when he left prison to go under house arrest. Now Ilaria Salis will be able to celebrate her 40th birthday, which she turns on Monday, in her hometown. “Now a nightmare is over,” said his father Roberto as soon as he got out of the car, exhausted from over 2,000 kilometers traveled in 24 hours but happy. The new MEP, however, did not make any statement: “very tired and worn out”, she immediately went home, after smiling in amazement at seeing the journalists crowded together waiting for her. Together, father and daughter stopped one last time to take a photo in front of the Monza road sign and now they can think about her birthday party. Indeed, at parties in the plural. «We have to do two to make up for last year», joked Mr. Salis, and then ideally concluded his “public mandate” of recent months: «Now I resign as spokesperson for Ilaria and leave the scene completely».
