paralyzed traffic and hours of waiting in the sun

Black Saturday for motorists and residents of via Benedetto Croce in Salerno. The Gatto viaduct, one of the main road junctions in the city, was the scene of a massive traffic jam that paralyzed traffic for hours. As documented by the Facebook page “Figli delle Chiancarelle” and relaunched by the journalist of L’Ora, Andrea Pellegrino, a long column of cars, motorbikes and trucks blocked the entire artery up to the motorway axes.

The situation was also particularly complex in via Ligea, near the accesses to the port. Numerous motorists, mostly headed towards the beaches of the Bay and the other Salerno seaside resorts, were trapped under the scorching sun. At the same time, access to the port for embarkation and the transit of trucks to and from the commercial port have further aggravated the situation.

Today’s traffic jam has once again highlighted the critical issues related to mobility on the Gatto viaduct, a crucial infrastructure for Salerno’s city and commercial traffic. Local authorities are called upon to find timely solutions to avoid the recurrence of similar inconveniences, especially during periods of high tourist and commercial influx.

“There needs to be a traffic management plan that can predict and mitigate these events,” said one resident. Today, with hours of waiting under the sun, represents a warning for the institutions to intervene urgently to improve the road system and the quality of life of the citizens of Salerno.
