farewell to Luciano Marani, historic president of Ahena Basket VIDEO

A frightening E45 crash between a car and a lorry ended the life of an entrepreneur who made the history of road haulage, especially with his famous refrigerated trucks: Luciano Marani. She was 84 years old and the exploits of the legendary Ahena, the Cesena women’s basketball team, are also linked to his name, of which he was president for a long time in the golden years. In that period he went on to win the Champions Cup, a Ronchetti Cup and the national championship. Together with Antonio Porfiri and Enrico Martini, off the pitch he was the great protagonist of that sporting history.

Accident in San Carlo

Yesterday, around 6.15pm, Marani died instantly following an accident that occurred near the San Carlo junction, which forced the highway to be closed in both directions. In addition to a large foreign heavy vehicle driven by a woman and the victim, a motorcyclist riding a large-displacement Kawasaki was also involved in the disaster. Miraculously he escaped practically unscathed, slipping into the narrow space between the two vehicles that collided, after the lighter one overturned, and managing to brake before crashing. Another car, on board which there were a husband and wife and two children, also avoided the disaster, despite suffering damage, managing to pass through a space left free in the middle of that infernal scene.

Everything happened on the lane where you normally travel towards Cesena. But not yesterday, as often happens, because there are works and traffic flows are diverted to the other side, through openings in the guardrail, essentially creating a double direction of travel without separation. The truck and the motorbike were proceeding towards Rome, while Marani was traveling towards Cesena. Suddenly the elderly businessman started to skid to the left and the truck driver, seeing him coming towards her, tried to throw herself to the right, against the parapet on the edge of the road. But she was unable to avoid the collision, which was fatal. The attempts to stop made by all the people who lived through that nightmare were desperate and abrupt.

The tragedy occurred at km 216.200 of the E45. While the 118 rescuers could do nothing and the firefighters extracted the body from the wreckage, the police and Anas tried to regulate traffic. Until late in the evening, vehicles traveling along the highway were forced to exit in a southerly direction at the San Carlo junction (km 216.150) and in a northerly direction at the Borello Nord junction (km 214.200).

Luciano Marani, whose company was based in via Assano, lived in the centre, first in the Porta Trova area and then in Madonna delle Rose. He leaves behind his wife Nives Casavecchia and his children Andrea and Silvia.
