A quiet summer afternoon was suddenly shaken by a violent firefight in the populous Tramontone district of Taranto. It was just after 6pm when the quiet of Via Mediterraneo was shattered by a series of shots fired near a petrol station, throwing residents and passers-by into panic.
Initial reconstructions indicate that the shots were exchanged by people on board a scooter, who opened fire on a man who, fortunately, managed to dodge the shots without sustaining injuries. According to some rumours, the intended victim responded to fire, thus engaging in a real armed duel in broad daylight. The man in a car in turn chased the scooter and continued shooting. The vehicles arrived at a roundabout and then returned to the petrol station.
Numerous shell casings were found at the scene, and one of the bullets lodged in a pole at a height that could have been fatal if it had hit a person.
The alarm was immediate, and State Police agents and Scientific Police experts rushed to the scene to investigate the case. The investigations, conducted by the Flying Squad, are underway to reconstruct the exact dynamics of the events and identify those responsible for this serious episode.
The area was cordoned off and monitored by officers to allow investigators to collect all useful elements for the investigation.
