”Shaky” vote in Gela, the first appeal arrives

Actuality

The ongoing work of verifying the election results is already quite complex

The vote of the administrative bodies could have a long aftermath even after the proclamation of the mayor and the city council.

In these hours, the work of the Prefectural Commission is proceeding at full speed at Palazzo di Città, which is verifying the adequacy of the registers of the various electoral sections, overwhelmed by the post-voting chaos. The ongoing verification work is already quite complex and the commission that took office last Tuesday is engaged in the control activity following quite a few disputes over the numbers and percentages received from the polling stations. The official data of all the candidates for the city council are not known although today could be the right day to get a true picture.

In the meantime, however, the first official appeal arrives, a probable prelude to a possible recount of the ballots which, for the umpteenth time, could upset the balance achieved. The “Alleanza per Gela” group turned, through a lawyer, to the electoral commission, submitting a formal appeal. The references of the four lists that supported Salvatore Scerra, Moderati-Rinnova, Avanti Gela and “Scerra mayor” kept pace, overcoming the barrier. Which did not happen for Prima Gela-Pli. In the appeal the group requests a “verification and subsequent recount of all votes and invalid ballots both with reference to the attribution of the vote in the ballots to the candidate for the office of mayor and with regard to the attribution of votes to the individual candidates for the office of municipal councilor”.

It is believed that there was a “failure to attribute the vote to the candidate for mayor and to the associated lists as well as to the individual candidates for the city council”. In practice, according to the appellants, there would be several hundred ballots canceled in violation of the principle of protection of the voter’s will. Specifically, we read in the appeal, many voters, misled by the symbol of the “Scerra Mayor” list, would have crossed it out together with other lists of the same coalition in which there were candidates to whom preference was assigned. All these ballots, according to the appellants, were unfairly annulled and for this reason they are asking for an official recount.
