the compensation for damage from wild boars in the Sila Park penalizes farmers

With the compensation provided, farmers and breeders are not adequately compensated both for damage to field production and for the start of new sowing

Press release

From the application of the Resolution of the Board of Directors of the Sila Park Authority n° 18 of 23 October 2023 having as its object: “Approval of changes to the regulations for the compensation and prevention of damage caused by wild fauna to the agricultural and livestock heritage in the territory of the Sila National Park” the figure that stands out is compensation, independent of the value of the damaged property: a mere compensation that penalizes farmers.

At the request of several farmers, I wrote to the leaders of the Park Authority and the Ministry of the Environment.

This is what Pietro Molinaro, President of the Council Commission, claims “Against the phenomenon of the ‘Ndrangheta, corruption and widespread illegality”.

The regulation – he clarifies – is very penalizing, because it does not compensate for the damage ascertained and there is also an excess of power as “farmers are obliged to prepare all the protection measures legally possible and possibly prescribed by the Park Authority, aimed at protecting the crops”.

To add insult to injury!!! With the compensation provided, observes Molinaro, farmers and breeders are not adequately compensated both for damage to field production and for the start of new sowing.

It is clear that the farmer will not be able to carry on the business with the consequences in terms of food production, loss of jobs and market shares.

I believe that the justification cannot be sufficient, ” the number of compensation requests for damage from wildlife have grown exponentially in the last four years”.

If this happened – adds Molinaro – evidently there was damage and certainly not the fault of the farmers.

In light of all this, I believe – he concludes – that, by involving the farmers’ representatives, the regulation should be changed and adequate resources found to cover the damages already paid or in the process of being paid.
