Catanzaro. Two Siciliani students at the Physics Laboratory of the University of Bern

Alexandra Learned And Giovanni Mancusostudents of IV D and IV E respectively Sicilian Scientific High School of Catanzaro, took part in the project Excellence Summer Internship and they won one Scholarship financed by the Rotary District 2102 Calabria, which promoted the initiative. Numerous people have joined the project Club Rotary, including that of Catanzaro as leader.

The scholarship allows the winners to perform in the next months of July and Augustan internship at High Energy Physics Laboratory (LHEP), directed by Prof. Michele Weberat the Institute of Physics of the University of Bern. The LHEP deals with high energy physics and the development of new particle detectorsbut also of neutrino physics and of medical applications of particle physics.

At the Sicilian Scientific High School, the project was coordinated by the teachers Concettina Gaccia And Giuseppina Lico as part of the PCTO courses and supported by teaching activities carried out by the professor Pierfrancesco Riccardi of the Physics Department of Unical.

The initiative was born from the desire to offer young Calabrian students an opportunity with a broad educational scopebased on the affirmation of principles of meritocracy and the selection of excellent young people, through the diffusion of the value of scientific culture, with the aim of bringing future potential scientists closer to modern physics by introducing students to the method of scientific analysis based on experimentation and research in the field of applications of particle physics to medicine.

The aim of the school is for students – accompanied by teachers in the acquisition of increasingly higher skills – to prepare for the future.

“Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world and it is for this reason that we must guarantee children a quality education in order to allow them to ponder the choice of university with knowledge; I congratulate Alexandra and Giovanni and wish them a future full of satisfactions” commented the Headmaster Filomena Rita Folinofurther proud of the successes of its students who, as in the present past, have shown great commitment.
