Elections, everyone wins and no one loses: the political war between right and left in Calabria

COSENZA – The electoral geography, in the aftermath of the European elections of 8 and 9 June, appears controversial. Whichever angle one reads the numbers from, it actually seems difficult to decide a winner or a loser in an electoral campaign that has shown itself to be weak and subdued. And on the day after the vote, in Calabria, the political dispute becomes even more bitter in a duel between right-wing and left-wing parties in which it seems that everyone will emerge victorious.

The Calabrians, however, reward the party of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (Brothers of Italy) cwho gets 20.55%, improving the result of the 2022 elections when he obtained 18.98%. Forza Italia celebrates in our Region, led by governor Roberto Occhiuto, where it reaches 18.01% of the votes compared to 15.64%. While for the Calabria PD the Dems are the leading party in the South. For Domenico Furgiule, Calabrian deputy, “in Calabria the League goes beyond the national average“. “Indeed, in some places the national average is exceeded, such as in Lamezia Terme, Catanzaro, Crotone and up to Gizzeria where it is close to 30%”.

Cosenza and the province, all winners here too

For Mayor Franz Caruso “With the European vote Cosenza returns to being a stronghold of the center-left” continuing that “the coalition that governs Cosenza establishes itself as a majority thanks to the project that we are pursuing with determination”. On the other side too Maria Pia Funaro, former deputy mayor of Cosenza, candidate for the Green Left Alliance in the European elections, comments with pride and satisfaction on the electoral results, which have consecrated AVS.

The The 5 Star Movement holds its own in Cosenza and its province and positions itself ahead of the other parties with Pasquale Tridico at the European Championships and Flavio Stasi confirmed mayor of Corigliano Rossano, and therefore for the regional councilor Davide Tavernise the electoral result obtained by the pentestellates on the Cosenza Ionian Sea “demonstrates the concreteness of our actions and the maturity of our political project”

From Bisignano is the political group of Forza Italiagets straight to the point” specifying that “Although it is true that at a national level the 2024 European Championships were less attended with a progressive decline and “not only” in Bisignano as they would have you believe, thanks also to the fruitful work of the Forza Italia territorial club, the party achieved 20.64% of preferences. Contrary to what was declared, even today Forza Italia records growing figures and is the first party in the Bisignano area”.

For the mayor Paolo Pappaterra in Mormanno the Democratic Party confirms itself with 30% of the preferences: among the highest percentages in Calabria and certainly the first in the Pollino”.

The paradox in Calabria

However, a paradox emerges in Calabria: with a boom in abstentions – apart from the strength of the electorate which sees a more massive presence in the municipal elections – our Region sends four candidates to Parliament: Pasquale Tridico (M5S), Giusi Princi (FI), Mimmo Lucano (Avs) and Denis Nesci (FdI).
