Safe in the sun: skin screening

The awareness campaign on skin protection by the Italian Red Cross and Nivea Sun, now in its sixth edition, will stop in La Spezia on Sunday 16 June. The initiative, sponsored by the Municipality of Spezia and the Port Authority, is part of a prevention tour which includes 9 stops throughout the national territory, with the aim of increasing people’s awareness and preventing damage caused by exposure to Sun. On Sunday in Passeggiata Morin from 9.30 to 18.30, citizens will be able to undergo free skin screening inside the mobile clinic of the Italian Red Cross. Dermatologists will provide free consultations to prevent the onset of skin diseases (including cutaneous melanoma) and to provide useful information on the risks of incorrect sun exposure, in view of the summer. Even today there is a need to raise awareness among the population on the importance of using sunscreen to enjoy the sun in complete safety. Thanks to prevention activities, over the last twenty years the number of melanomas removed at an early stage has increased significantly: this translates into more effective treatment and greater survival five years after the onset of the pathology. “Since melanoma has a prognosis strictly dependent on the depth of its infiltration into the skin tissue at the time of diagnosis – underlines CRI from La Spezia in an NKTA – prevention and subsequent treatment translate into an increased survival rate of approximately 15%”
