The Communiqué.

During the preventive archeology activities, started in the Piano d’Accio area as part of the completion of the agro-bio-veterinary centre, burials dating back to the Iron Age were found.

Following the discovery, the ABAP Superintendence for the Provinces of L’Aquila and Teramo requested the archaeological excavation of the entire project area, in order to fully bring to light the burials of the ancient necropolis.

The University of Teramo, under the scientific direction of the Superintendency, therefore promptly commissioned a team of professionals who are carrying out the excavation and recovery of the archaeological remains; they are the archaeologists Alessandro Mucciante and Iolanda Piersanti, the restorer Laura Petrucci and the anthropologist Samantha Fusari, assisted by the company Progeco srl.

At present, two areas of the necropolis have been identified, which is made up of “circle” type tombs, characterized by the presence, in the center of the stone circle that marks the tomb, of a pit containing the deceased and his grave goods. These are mostly ceramic vases of various types, symbols of the aristocratic banquet, iron weapons in the case of male individuals and fibulae and spindle whorls for women.

Of particular interest is the burial of a child, who has a torques in iron, a collar typical of children’s tombs, which can also be compared in the necropolis excavated in Teramo, in the La Cona area, as part of the Lot 0 works.

At present, the burials seem to date back to between the 7th and 6th centuries. BC, but only the detailed study of the materials found will be able to provide further chronological elements.

The discovery, of great interest for understanding the settlement dynamics of the 1st millennium BC, falls within those cases in which, as also provided for by the Procurement Code, the archaeological excavation exhausts the reasons for protection; therefore, once the research activities have been completed, the area will be free and the planned public work can be built, i.e. a building dedicated to the hospitalization of large animals.

The University of Teramo and the Superintendency are already working towards a valorisation agreement, so that the archaeological finds are restored, studied, published and valorised through their museum display in the spaces made available by the University itself.

On the occasion of the European Days of Archaeology, it will be possible to visit the archaeological site on Sunday 16 June and listen to the professionals’ stories about the discoveries and activities being carried out. The event, by reservation, is organized thanks to the synergy between the Superintendence, the University of Teramo and FAI-Italian Environment Fund, Delegation of Teramo. The reservation can be made on the FAI Reservations portal at the link:
