Sicilian art returns to dress the new glasses of Messina beer which, also in 2024, continues on its path of homage to the island that gave it birth, drawing inspiration from its riches. Four years after the first launch, the 3 new glasses close the collection of 9 masterpieces, to give life to a real tribute journey to discover the 9 Sicilian provinces. The new creations, signed by Sicilian artists Michelangelo Lacagnina, Alessandra Pennino and Valerio Pirrone, were previewed at the Milan Design Week within the exhibition itinerary inside the Bar Meraviglia. The decorations of the three new glasses, inspired by the mosaics of Piazza Armerina (Enna), the blossoming almond tree of Agrigento and the Castles of Caltanissetta, tell both the story of the artists who created the friezes and the concrete commitment of Birra Messina in celebrating the art of this wonderful land, thus combining tradition and innovation.

THE ARTISTS WHO SIGNED THE 3 NEW GLASSES OF MESSINA BEER
Michelangelo Lacagnina, specialized as an Interior art Designer, expresses the warmth and poetry of Sicilian everyday life through full-bodied brushstrokes full of color and brightness in the decoration of the glass dedicated to Enna. The artist was inspired by the Roman Villa del Casale, from which he extrapolated a garland of ivy leaves, a shoot of laurel and acanthus foliage, re-proposing the sinuosities of the spirals and spirals with the usual berries. He also gave scrupulous attention to the geometric constructions of the medallions and rosettes which follow one another in each mosaic decoration and which are represented in several edges of the body of the glass. The proposed composition develops a real story: by simply rotating the glass you can relive the wonderful mosaic work of the Villa, an excellent example of the artistic culture of Sicily.

Alessandra Pennino, born in Agrigento and with a past as a painter, has made Sicilian nature and culture her sources of inspiration. She thus based the design of the glass dedicated to Agrigento on the study of the shape of the almond tree, seeking compositional harmony between the intertwining of its branches and the stylization of its flower. The result is a succession of sinuous and decorative elements that create a floral frame whose flowers are just hinted at with small brushstrokes of colour. A drawing created to depict the Sicilian spring, as the artist’s eyes see it: delicate, joyful and at the same time elegant. The choice of colors recalls the Mediterranean warmth which, blending with the bright yellow of the beer, recalls the sea, the clear sky and the brilliant sun.

Valerio Pirrone, who discovered a passion for art and drawing the human body as a child, took inspiration for his creation from one of the best preserved castles in the province of Caltanissetta, the Mussomeli Castle, built between 1300 and 1400 and decorated in Chiaramonte Gothic style. The zigzag moldings and large pointed arches are typical, also shown on the front of the glass design.
