Ragusa, the “Eco-narratives. Training workshops for educational care” arrive

The Municipality of Ragusa, in collaboration with the Department of Education Sciences of the University of Catania, is pleased to announce the presentation of the publication “Eco-narrations. Training workshops for educational care”. The event will take place on Saturday 15 June at 5pm in the courtyard of the Prefecture, as part of the “A Tutto Volume” literary event, which will take place from 13 to 16 June.

The publication is the result of an intense training project which involved over 100 nursery, primary and lower secondary school teachers in the city of Ragusa. Through a cycle of theoretical-practical meetings, held by university professors and experts in narrative pedagogy, teachers had the opportunity to develop narrative practices within their classes. The activities took place in the SoffiaSogno space of the “Giovanni Verga” municipal library.

Recently, the project obtained the award of the Report of Excellence – “Filippo Basile” Award during the XX edition of the Aif Conference on Training in Public Administration, held in Genoa on 17 May 2024.

The authors of the book, Gabriella d’Aprile and Giambattista Bufalino, professors of the Department of Education Sciences of the University of Catania, will be present to discuss the impacts and results of the work. The meeting will be moderated by Ragusa’s Education Councilor, Catia Pasta.

“Storytelling is a powerful pedagogical tool; it goes far beyond simply telling stories. It is a transformative practice – explain Gabriella d’Aprile and Giambattista Bufalino -. We would like to express our gratitude to the teachers who, with their care and dedication, contributed to the success of this project. Thanks to their commitment, we were able to experiment with innovative practices, effective in stimulating the curiosity and commitment of students and in cultivating eco-wisdom and ecological awareness. We are convinced that through storytelling it is possible to build an educational environment that places the human experience at the center of the learning process”

“It will be an honor for me to moderate the meeting on June 15th to make known how beautiful there is in this publication – declares Education Councilor Catia Pasta -. Narrative pedagogy has often been underestimated and linked to the “learning to read” function. However, narration is important as a “way to organize experience”, a way that allows children to develop emotional intelligence, empathy, language and communication. Thanks to narration, the child can discover and learn about the world around him but at the same time he can become an active part of it from childhood thanks to the cultivation of a conscience in this ecological context. I thank the representatives of DISFOR in Catania for the work done, a great understanding was born between us which I hope will lead to other fruitful collaborations”.
