Blood Donor Day: initiatives in Isili, Muravera and Quartu

Every year on June 14th, countries around the world, encouraged by the WHO, celebrate the World Blood Donor Day. This year the theme is 20 years of celebrating donations: thank you blood donors! The 20th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day is an excellent and timely opportunity to thank blood donors around the world for their life-saving donations over the years and honor the profound impact on both patients and donors. It is also an opportune time to address ongoing challenges and accelerate progress towards a future where safe blood transfusion is universally accessible.

Sardinia is one of the regions where the most donations are made, but it is not enough to cover the high need due to the large number of patients suffering from transfusion-dependent pathologies. We need more awareness and greater involvement of citizens to grow the culture of donations, saving and caring for many lives.

Objectives of the Day

• Celebrate and give thanks people who donate blood and encourage young people to become donors.
• Emphasize the need for a periodic commitment to donation to be able to maintain an adequate availability of blood and blood components and to contribute to national self-sufficiency.
• Draw attention to blood and plasma donation as an expression of a community’s participation in the healthcare system, given that transfusion therapies cure thousands of patients every day.
• Promote the values ​​of the blood donor community to increase the solidarity and the social cohesionand to encourage people to care about each other.
• Promote i correct lifestyles and attention to one’s health which are necessary conditions to be able to approach donation

The initiatives

Quartu Sant’Elena

The Blood Collection Transfusion Organizational Unit of Quartu District participates in the initiative on June 14th with a day dedicated to both donations and health education. The staff will be available to citizens for information on issues relating to blood donation and diseases that can be treated with blood component transfusions.

Muravera

Blood Collection Center of the PO San Marcellino of Muravera
The donations will take place on June 14th from 8.30 to 12.15 and during the morning refreshments will be made available by the AVIS of Muravera-Sarrabus.

Isili

The blood collection center of the Isili hospital (via Emilia n. 1 – first floor) will be open for donations on Wednesday 12 June from 7.30 to 11.30, upon reservation at 3669339343. At 12 there will be space for a moment of discussion and debate in the room conferences at the San Giuseppe hospital for the operators of the hospital itself. The representative of the blood collection unit of San Giuseppe Dr. Maria Balata will illustrate the organization of the Transfusion Unit which recently obtained recognition as a Stem Cell Donor Recruitment Centre, for which healthcare personnel will soon be available to citizens for information and insights not only on the topic of blood donation but also bone marrow and stem cells.
