TURIN – Since the early hours of this morning, the Central Operational Service of the Central Anti-Crime Directorate of the State Police (SISCO) has launched a maxi operation against the ‘ndrangheta in the contracts of the municipality of Turin relating to the Cioccolatò event and the Christmas markets.

Officers arrested eight people, accused of extortion, kidnapping and private violence. Among the suspects they stand out Giacomo Lo Surdoformer head of the Juventus ultras group known as “Arditi”, considered an exponent of the Crotone ‘Ndrangheta based in Turin, and the entrepreneur Francesco Ferrara. The arrested were taken to the “Lorusso e Cutugno” prison in Turin.

The investigation was started in 2017, following the discovery of a round of fictitious companies, all connected to “Buongiorno Italia”, a company founded by the entrepreneur Ferrara and created to participate in the municipal tenders. The investigations revealed how Ferrara, with the protection of top exponents of mafia-type organized crime, exercised a strong intimidation towards his collaborators, often culminating in threats and violent acts. One of the most serious incidents occurred when a former collaborator requested payment of approximately 20 thousand euros in commissions through legal action. The suspects forced the collaborator to withdraw the action by threatening, kidnapping and beating him (they even attempted to strangle him with a rope around his neck). Similar mafia methods were used to force other victims to satisfy the requests of the entrepreneur, who made use of the collaboration of affiliates of the ‘Ndrangheta and common crime.
