Better late than never. But there is obviously nothing, nothing, to justify. And not even worth celebrating. Finally – although to be sure we are waiting for concrete and real intervention – on illegal landfill of Mortara-San Gregorio there will be a major cleanup operation. It is one of the areas of Reggio Calabria worse as far as it goes the garbage emergencya large area – the road leads to the general markets – where the most serious environmental crimes have been taking place for years: illicit disposal of waste and continuous fires. Studies have also been carried out on the matter which have highlighted the correlation between these bad facts and the onset of diseases.
When Falcomatà got angry
Solutions to solve? Nothing, so far. And the story has been going on for years and years. Despite complaints, complaints and protests, the Municipality has never really dealt with the matter. Indeed, a few months ago, Mayor Falcomatà got angry with the Rai correspondent who – live and with him in the studio – reported the issue on TV. The mayor said that that road should be closed to traffic, trying to hide the real problem.
The order from early April
At the beginning of April, the first jolt. The Mayor published and signed an ordinance with which it imposed the removal and disposal of abandoned waste as well as the restoration of the places. This followed a 2018 investigation involving some companies. In the ordinance the Mayor asked “four people, in their capacity as legal representatives and/or partners of the companies involved, to take care of what is indicated above at their own expense within 60 days of notification of the order. In case of non-compliance, the municipal administration will proceed directly, except for the recovery of the sums advanced from the obliged parties and consequent reporting to the judicial authority in accordance with the provisions, in these cases, of the Environmental Code”.
The intervention of Logam Srl
No follow-up to that order. And, we know, action could have been taken much earlier. It should have been done sooner. It could have been prevented. And instead the Municipality, which has already spent over the years to send waste outside the Region, and which has paid and continues to pay millions to companies for door-to-door waste collection, will shell out almost 150 thousand euros to entrust it to a company from Villa San Giovanni “the negotiated procedure for the assignment of the execution of a ‘massive’ intervention of removal, transport and start of recovery/disposal of urban and special waste abandoned by unknown persons in the Mortara area of Reggio Calabria”.
There determine it’s from a few days ago. The contract was won by “Logam Srl”, in judicial administration. The sum is included in the forecasts of the TARI Economic and Financial Plan for the year 2024 and is committed to the Accounts Plan item 1.03.02.15.004 of the three-year budget 2024-2026. The offers upon expiry they were Three: Ecopiana Srl, Logam Srl and Salvaguardiaambiente Spa. The best offer – as stated in the determination – was that of the company Logam Srl, equal to €. 145,800.00. It remains only to establish when the intervention will be carried out, to free the citizens of the area from a real nightmare. And in the hope, also, that after the cleaning it will be possible to adequately monitor the area, to prevent it from immediately returning to play the role of an illegal open-air landfill.
