Border checks, nine arrests in two weeks in Trieste

TRIESTE From 20 May to 4 June, nine arrests were made by the State Police of Trieste, specifically by the personnel of the Border Police Sector, involved both in the controls reintroduced at the Slovenian border following the suspension of the Schengen Agreement, and in services aimed at combating irregular immigration.

Of particular note is the arrest on May 29th, when in the late afternoon a bus departing from Zagreb and heading to Naples was checked at the Pese border crossing (Municipality of San Dorligo della Valle).

The investigations into the identity of the passengers revealed the presence of a 31-year-old Serbian citizen, with various criminal and police records and with numerous aliases, recipient of a detention order issued in March last year by the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Court Ordinary of Bolzano. The woman, now in the local prison in via del Coroneo, must serve a cumulative sentence of 23 years, 10 months and 15 days in prison for crimes against her property.

Also on the afternoon of May 29th, but at the San Servolo crossing (Municipality of San Dorligo della Valle), a 27-year-old Romanian citizen who arrived from Slovenia driving a car with Romanian license plate together with five irregular migrants from Turkish nationality, a woman and three men aged between 15 and 24 and a three-year-old child. On charges of aiding and abetting illegal immigration, the Romanian driver was arrested and transferred to the prison in Via del Coroneo, while his car was seized. A 33-year-old Georgian citizen expelled by decree of the Prefect of Milan in September 2019 and a 26-year-old Albanian citizen expelled by decree of the Prefect of Varese in November 2020 should not have returned to Italy before the age of five.

The first was traveling on board a bus that left Budapest for Milan and was identified during the check at the Fernetti crossing (Municipality of Monrupino) in the early morning hours of May 21st. The second was identified in the late evening of May 23rd. May we always went to the Fernetti pass; he was traveling on board a bus on the Zagreb-Marseille route. The 36-year-old Romanian citizen arrested in the early hours of the morning of May 26th at the Fernetti crossing will serve a sentence of four years and 20 days in prison for crimes against the public administration, the administration of justice and property.

The man, who was traveling on board a Romanian bus on the Romania-Spain route, was the recipient of a detention order issued in October 2022 by the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of Padua. He is currently in the local prison in via del Coroneo. The 33-year-old Bosnian citizen, a passenger on board a bus heading to Turin from Zagreb, was arrested at the Fernetti crossing on the night of May 28th. From investigations into her identity, it emerged that the woman, without documents, was the recipient of a detention order issued in April last year by the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Ordinary Court of Venice. The Bosnian citizen, now in the local prison, must serve a cumulative sentence of eight years, ten months and twenty-seven days of imprisonment for crimes against property.

On the morning of May 31, a 34-year-old Moldovan citizen was arrested and definitively sentenced to six years and six months in prison for the crimes of criminal association and aiding and abetting immigration and prostitution. Having entered Italy on foot from the Fernetti crossing, a check revealed that he had a detention order issued last April by the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Ordinary Court of Frosinone. The man was transferred to the Coroneo prison.

Two other passers, both Romanian nationals, were blocked at the Fernetti crossing: the first, aged 36, was checked at dawn on 4 June while driving a car with an Italian license plate; the second, aged 29, was instead stopped at dawn on 5 June, as the driver of a vehicle with a Romanian license plate. Each accompanied four irregular migrants to Italy, all adults, except one who was therefore entrusted to a suitable reception facility. The two are now in the Trieste prison at the disposal of the Judicial Authority, while their cars have been seized.
