Elections. In Massa Lombarda it’s a three-way race: the center-left is aiming for Sangiorgi, the right is divided between Brini and Tozzola

On Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June the over 10 thousand inhabitants of Massa Lombarda are called to vote in the European elections. The polls will be open on Saturday 8 June from 3pm to 11pm and Sunday 9 June from 7am to 11pm. On the same days and at the same hours the people of Massaggio also go to vote to elect the mayor and the 16-member municipal council. The municipal counting is scheduled for 2pm on Monday. We remind you that for the European Parliament elections we vote with the proportional system but with a threshold of 4%. While for the administrative elections in the municipalities there is a double system. In municipalities like Massa Lombarda with up to 15,000 inhabitants, voting is done using the single-round majority system: the candidate and the associated list that obtained more votes than the other competitors win, even just one more vote is enough.

HOW TO VOTE

European elections. Each voter can vote for only one list by placing a mark on the mark of the chosen list or in the rectangle containing this mark. Each voter can express up to a maximum of three preference votes for candidates on a list. In the case of multiple preferences expressed, these must concern candidates of different sex, under penalty of cancellation of the second and third preferences. The preferential vote can be expressed for candidates included in the voted list. The preference vote is expressed by writing the name and surname or only the surname of the preferred candidates included in the same list.

Municipal elections. You vote with a single ballot to elect both the mayor and the city councilors. The name of the mayoral candidate is already printed on the ballot, with the mark of the only list that supports him next to it. The vote is expressed by drawing a mark on the list mark or on the name of the candidate for mayor. It is not possible to vote for a candidate for the office of mayor other than the one linked to the list. The votes obtained by the candidate for the office of mayor are attributed to the list connected to him. For municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, you can express your preference for a candidate for the municipal council by writing the surname in the appropriate line next to the list symbol. For municipalities between 5,000 and 15,000, one or two preferences can be expressed for candidates for the municipal council. If there are two, they must concern candidates of different sexes from the same list, under penalty of cancellation of the second preference. The candidate who obtains the highest number of votes is elected mayor.

In the event of a tie between two candidates, voting will return for the latter on Sunday 23 June – from 7am to 11pm – and on Monday 24th – from 7am to 3pm (runoff). Also in this case, whoever obtains the most votes of the two will be elected. In the event of a further tie, the eldest is declared elected. Once the mayor has been elected, the council is also defined: the list that supports the elected mayor will receive 2/3 of the available seats, while the remaining seats will be distributed proportionally among the other lists.

IN 2019

In 2019 it ended 70 to 30 for the center-left. The centre-left mayor Daniele Bassi (“Il Futuro in Comune”) was re-elected for the umpteenth time with 70.7% of the votes. Maria Elena Morra (“United for Massa Lombarda”) for the center-right stopped at 29.3%.

ELECTIONS 2024

This time there are three candidates in the running.

After Daniele Bassi’s exit, the Democratic Party and the center-left are running for mayor Stefano Sangiorgi with the list “Massa Lombarda Futura – Sangiorgi Mayor – Centre-Left”. Small entrepreneur of an independent IT company, Sangiorgi was Councilor with Bassi for Civil Protection, Environment and Personnel for 10 years. He is very active in volunteering, president of Avis.

The center-right in Massa Lombarda is divided. On the one hand there is Antonella Brini with the “Civic List Live Massa Lombarda” which also has Maria Elena Morra among its candidates, who in 2019 was the mayoral candidate of the united centre-right. Fratelli d’Italia intervened with an official note to clarify that she is not with Brini.

Finally, here it is Giovanni Tozzola known as Gianni with “The Square Together” who declares himself neither right nor left, but collects the open support of some official exponents of the Brothers of Italy and the center-right of the area.
