“Exactly two months before the regional elections, Lucanian farmers do not yet have a reference councillor with which to confront and concretely discuss solutions to deal with the very serious consequences of the continuing absence of rain which is raging across the Region and which is significantly complicating the socio-economic stability of an irreplaceable component of Basilicata’s production”.

Agriculture, as is known, is a sector linked to the cyclical nature of the seasons, a sector which due to its intrinsic nature cannot afford the luxury of waiting for political timeseven more so in a complex phase such as the current one, characterized by a difficult economic situation, with high production costs and unfavorable market conditions.
Furthermore, agricultural producers continue to be caught in the grip of drought and are paying the price extremely hot winter, which was followed by one very dry spring with almost no rainfall.
It is a dramatic situation, which has emptied the reservoirs and eliminated the water availability necessary to irrigate the fieldswhere they are now durum wheat cultivations compromised, for which they are esteemed production drops of 60-70%, e of all arable crops, legumes and fodder crops, not to mention the very serious repercussions on the entire livestock production chain.
No later than a month ago, when the agricultural situation was decidedly less compromised than the current condition, we had launched a heartfelt appeal to the President of the Region Vito Bardiso that he would take charge of the difficulties of the Lucanian head physician.
This request, sent at a time when there was still something that could be saved, unfortunately fell on deaf ears, so much so that the president not only never called us, but didn’t even respond.
Today, water scarcity is taking on such a scale that it is forcing water authorities to ask all municipalities to limit as much as possible, if not eliminate, the use of water for all non-essential uses.
