Trapani will be present next Monday 10 June to remember the assassination of the socialist deputy Giacomo Matteotti, killed by fascists on the same day 100 years ago. And this happened after his last speech in the Chamber of Deputies. It was May 30, 1924. Matteotti contested the validity of the electoral consultation of the previous April 6. That vote which took place under the threat and oppression of the fascists led by Benito Mussolini. The following June 10th, while Matteotti was walking along the Tiber in Rome towards the Chamber of Deputies, he was kidnapped and killed by a fascist commando. His body will be found on August 18th of 1924 which was marking the start of the fascist dictatorship in our country. The event in Trapani will take place at 5pm on June 10th. In the small square in the historic center dedicated to the socialist deputy, martyr of fascism. The principals of ANPI, ARTICLE 21 and LIBERA organized it. A couple of excerpts will be read from the last speech made in Montecitorio by the Hon. Matteotti, In the morning in the same square, starting at 9, another more institutional ceremony will be held, promoted by the Municipal Administration of Trapani. “We – say the promoters of the afternoon event – have addressed a broad invitation to public institutions and citizens, to associations involved in social issues, to those from the religious world, to workers’ unions, to the world of information, because we believe it is important that in more moments the City of Trapani can listen and know the story of the deputy Matteotti.
We also think that talking about Matteotti today, listening to his words again, also means defending the Constitution and all the freedoms enshrined in the Constitutional text, in an Italy where we see signs that go in directions opposite to those indicated in the Constitutional Charter”. “We believe – says Rino Giacalone spokesperson for Articolo 21 whose club in Trapani is dedicated to the late Santo Della Volpe – that today we must reiterate the clear concept that the proposed reforms do not convince us and that when a Parliament acts in this field with of majority means opening the doors to regimes that may have very little democracy. We are then dismayed that while the memory of Matteotti is being celebrated, there are those who are thinking of a stamp dedicated to the squad member Italo Foschi, someone who (reminds us of Repubblica) defined Amerigo Dumini, the leader of the fascist squad that murdered the socialist deputy: “You are a hero, you have all our admiration.” “We – concludes Giacalone. we will never be able to admire those in this Government who had the nerve to remember Italo Foschi, a character to whom Mussolini used to commission punitive, violent and bloody actions”. In the province of Trapani there will be other moments dedicated to the memory of Giacomo Matteotti. In Marsala at 6.30pm on June 10th another demonstration will take place, in the square also dedicated to Giacomo Matteotti.
