Expanding the Lecce public transport network to the hinterland: the initiative of some regional councilors. Codacons: “An opportunity not to be missed”

LECCE – For decades the Codacons of Lecce has maintained that the attractive force of the city of Lecce in terms of daily admissions is comparable to that of a small capital.

“And for decades we have been placing this circumstance at the center of public debate as the central theme in trying to resolve the traffic problem in the city – writes Cristian Marchello, head of Codacons Lecce – The objective we have always pursued has been to prevent or at least limit car access, especially for commuters who represent a large portion of daily access to the city.
And it is from this perspective that we criticized the project of installing the trolleybus in the city which instead of developing within the wallsto city would, in this vision, have had to expand to the city’s hinterland, directing and involving the towns closest to Lecce such as Surbo – Monteroni – Cavallino – Lizzanello – Merine – San Cesario and perhaps also Novoli and Campi Salentina. Now, thanks to some advisors Regionalthethis vision can become reality. Although with a delay, so to speak, of twenty years compared to our proposals, news has emerged in recent days of the filing in the Puglia Region of a proposed amendment to Regional Law no. 18 of 31.10.2002, with which the company would be allowed to management of the public transport service to extend its service lines also to neighboring countries with undoubted advantages for citizens and consumers, especially commuters, who will be able to leave the car at home and arrive at work by public transport with beneficial effects from many points of view.

The Codacons of Lecce therefore hopes for a prompt approval of this common sense proposal which, if adopted, can deliver it into the hands of the future TOadministrationion Ca useful tool for overall traffic management in the city which in recent years, it is useless to tie it down, has exploded considerably and in an absolutely worsening way, creating chaos and disorder.

Better management of vehicular flows (accompanied by serious traffic planning in the city) will in fact make it possible to more easily prepare interchange areas close to the centre, a better and more efficient network of alternative services, an integrated vision of the intermodality of the various means of transport, a seriesto management of pedestrian flows especially in the city center, a calibrated closure of some areas of the city and a reasoned modification of some directions of the streets. Hypothesis that the Codacons of Lecce has always urged the various municipal administrations that have followed one another over time. The one posed by these regional councilors is a challenge that the next Municipal Administration, of any color be it, it must know how to grasp abandonmentI give ideological interventions and commercials.

Only afterwards, and therefore at the end of a complex and structural project intervention, or after having given citizens serious opportunities for alternative mobility, will it be possible, perhaps, to get a parking ticket and think about closing Piazza Mazzini to cars.

The Codacons of Lecce, on this point, launches a challenge to the next municipal administration so that it is promotedrice di questto legislative initiative, hoping that it will enhance the other countless proposals that the Codacons of Lecce has put forward over the many years of activity”.
