ZTL Sting in Como: 180 fines per day

Four thousand more fines in a year for those who entered the limited traffic zone without authorization and were photographed by the electronic police stationed at the various access points to the historic centre. From the 63,333 detected between the spring of 2022 and 2023, it went to 67,344 (in the following year) with an increase of approximately 4 thousand fines. It means more than 5,600 fines per month and just under 200 per day (185 to be precise, taking the arithmetic average). These are tourists (in many cases, explains the local police commander Vincenzo Aiello, these are those who, without looking carefully at the signs, enter from via Rodari and exit from via Cairoli, thus not passing through the walled city, but still violating the ban on access in a limited traffic area), but there are also vans that do not respect times and entry methods. Among other things, there are also some “ghost” gates without the presence of cameras that somehow allow you to enter the prohibited area, but you can still run into checks by the local police and the exit is still detected. The cameras do not detect the actual time spent in the restricted traffic zone by residents as the control would violate precise regulations related to privacy, but high fines have been recorded from real agents who have pinched cars parked for a long time (well over 45 minutes). permitted) or those who continued to change the parking disc while still leaving the car parked in the heart of the city.

While the fines increased, the number of permits issued during the year decreased, dropping from 5,211 to 4,657. But the entire ZTL remains under special surveillance also because the mayor Alessandro Rapinese has already announced its intention to intervene with a tightening from a technological point of view and “in the field” controls. “Evidently – he commented yesterday – more than 67 thousand fines are still few considering the vehicles present in the centre”. And recently Rapinese has also announced its intention, not in the short term, to include via Rubini in the restricted traffic zone (which, among other things, has also been requested on several occasions by residents in the area who complain about high-speed cars and motorbikes with and music at full volume even in the middle of the night) allowing only access to authorized persons and to the Jasca car park but with an active gate and, therefore, capable of sanctioning anyone who enters the rear portion of Piazza Volta without reason. And in one year the violation notices also increased (most of them for parking restrictions) going from 31,577 to 33,518, therefore 2 thousand more.

The next few weeks will be decisive for the authorization to position speed cameras in five city streets (Napoleona, Paoli, Varesina, Canturina and ring road) and to follow – not before 2025 – the mayor has already announced his intention to implement a specific “package” for electronic controls which also includes speed cameras for those who run a red light and the verification of those who use the preferential lanes without having the right to do so, in addition to the new rules for the ZTL.
