Tram, the new road system on Corso Tukory – part 1

Palermo – With this article we begin a series of in-depth studies which concern the work on future tram lines, and which will certainly have an significant impact on traffic, roads and liveability in the areas affected. Work which will probably begin by the end of the year and which concerns the extensions of the current C Calatafimi-Basile-Stazione C.le- and B Notarbartolo-Libertà lines.

What we illustrate to you are part of the final project, which we have already covered even before the publication of the tender notice. Therefore nothing exclusive or unpublished, but rather documents in the public domain.

Line C will be extended from the current Calatafimi junction along the ring road, Basile junction, via Basile (along the central traffic island), Corso Tukory, Piazza G. Cesare, via Balsamo.

The route will be affected by significant changes to traffic including the new remodeling of the Calatafimi junction, a series of roundabouts along via E. Basile and the new road system on Corso Tukory.

We focus on the new roundabout that will be built between the entrance to via Piave and via Brasa. A crucial point characterized today by an opening on via E. Basile and which allows those arriving from via Brasa to turn around. Queues are inevitable during rush hours.

The new roundabout will also be characterized by the creation of a further opening right on Piazza Stazzone

In this section the tram will run in the direction of Corso Tukory, along the roadway of Via Basile opposite the Massaro bar and still occupied by a preferential bus lane.

The red stripes at the edge of the carriageways are cycle lanes which will connect the upper part of via Basile with the cycle path (soon to be built) which will connect to the central station.

Obviously these works will first be accompanied by the relocation of the underground services. We will delve deeper into the rest of the route to the central station in subsequent articles.
