From announcements to jobs. The Udine-Venice railway lineone of the “slowest” in all of Northern Italy given the average age of the infrastructure and the few improvements that have been made to the tracks and technology in recent decades, is preparing to experience six months of construction sites to emerge from oblivion. And these are long-awaited maintenances, called upon above all to reduce the heavy inconveniences that many passengers and commuters are still forced to experience on a regular basis. Since Sunday, in fact, the line will be under the knife at least until the end of December. And the stretch affected by the majority of the operations will be precisely the one between Pordenone and Udine, in the heart of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

THE TURNING POINT

Technological improvements in the Udine area, maintenance and insulation of bridges in the province of Pordenone. These are the first two operations that the Rete Ferroviaria Italiana company, which manages the modernization of the infrastructure throughout the country, will carry out. However, there will be inconveniences, but let’s proceed in an orderly manner. In particular, in Udine the connection cables between the track and line equipment will be installed with the new central computerized apparatus (Acc) under construction. The activation, scheduled for 2025, will allow the increase in capacity of the railway infrastructure, the improvement of traffic management in the Udine hub and a further increase in safety standards. On line, between the stations of Udine and Pordenone, maintenance and waterproofing works will be carried out on four bridges. These are important technological upgrade and infrastructural enhancement interventions. To allow the construction sites to operate, it will be necessary to suspend the movement of trains for a few nights in the coming months starting from 9 June.

LIMITATIONS

However, to smooth out delays and cancellations and experience a new season, with fewer breakdowns on the line, it will be necessary to endure six months of nightly interruptions at regular intervals. In particular, the regional train 3866, Venice Santa Lucia (11.01pm) – Udine (0.53am) will be cancelled; bus service is expected between Pordenone and Udine on 8 and 29 June, 24 and 31 August, 21 September, 2, 9 and 30 November and 7 December 2024.
Regional trains 3402, Venezia Santa Lucia (11.01pm) – Udine (0.53am) and 3865, Udine (6.01am) – Venezia Santa Lucia (7.59am), will be cancelled; bus service is expected between Pordenone and Udine on 9 and 30 June, 25 August, 1 and 22 September, 3 and 10 November, 1 and 8 December 2024. Trenitalia’s purchasing channels are updated.

THE PAINTING

The works on the Udine-Venice railway line come alongside those underway on the “Bassa”, i.e. on the railway that from Venice follows the Adriatic line and leads to the Monfalcone-Ronchi dei Legionari junction and then to Trieste. In this case the infrastructure will be updated to allow the convoys to reach up to two hundred kilometers per hour. Finally, the Udine hub, which can benefit from new state funding of 40 million euros.
